A Word From Our Editor, Grace Sylke
We’ve done it again– way underestimated what it was going to take to tell our personal story about the scourge on our planet called Diabetes.
This is a very real and personal story, and we’re really sticking our necks out here.
After all the Newsletters we’ve been writing about our Food System and the 8 Part Series on Obesity In America, we just couldn’t keep our personal story to ourselves.
Now that Series is going to have a Part 9, which is coming in December.

This is a Re-Print of our November 2015 Newsletter. If you’d like to receive our Newsletter in your in-box, just go to our Aquaponics USA website Home Page, scroll to the bottom and Subscribe:
Up until now, all of our Newsletters have been extensively researched explorations (or should I say tirades) into our U.S. Food System; and we’ve exposed a lot of problems with our Food Industry that is largely controlled by Big Food. We’ve also shared some things about what we’ve been up to over here at Aquaponics USA and Aquaponics World, LLC; but this Newsletter is very different and it gets very personal because it’s all about US–that’s “us”, Oliver and Grace, founders of Aquaponics USA and Aquaponics World.
After writing these Newsletters for almost two years, if we haven’t convinced anyone else to make some drastic changes in their eating choices and habits, we have convinced ourselves; and in late September, we decided to make ourselves the guinea pigs of a very interesting nutritional experiment. So now, we’re sharing that experiment with you.
In a way, this is research too–research that we’re living out day by day.

Here’s where it all started.

367 looks like an innocent number as it sits here on an angelic white background; but this  367 is a bad omen; and as I write this, I’m wondering how many people are wearing a number in this range on their backs (or should I say in their blood) and they don’t even know it.
For months as I, (Grace) was pattering away about the horrors of our food system, my own husband’s blood glucose numbers were climbing.
Then one day, he casually mentioned (you know how men are about these things) that his feet were either tingling or feeling numb and the ALARM BELL went off–onset of Diabetes!
My feet, of course, ran to the computer to research Diabetes: (List from the Healthline website article entitled ” Recognizing Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms”)
  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Increased hunger
  • Weight loss
  • Tiredness
  • Lack of interest and concentration
  • A tingling sensation or numbness in the hands or feet
  • Blurred vision
  • Sores or cuts that won’t heal

Oliver’s feet dangling in one of our five 120 gallon fish tanks and being nibbled by our Tilapia but NOT feeling a thing!
EGAD! My husband, Oliver, was exemplifying many of these symptoms. It was that, “Honey, we have to talk” moment. Now, this scary development wasn’t taking us totally by surprise. Before Oliver became a full-time Aquaponics USA/World entrepreneur, he had a Naturopathic Doctor in LA who told him with no uncertain terms that, “Sugar is not your friend; and if you continue down the sugar trail, you will end up with Type 2 Diabetes.” So the day of reckoning had arrived. What we did next was not normal.
We didn’t cart him off to an Allopathic Doctor or even his original Naturopathic Doctor. Before I tell you what we did, I need to describe the difference between these two types of Doctors. Naturopathic medicine “recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.” (Quote taken from the Naturopathic Physicians website article entitled ” Definition of Naturopathic Medicine“)
“According to MedTerms Dictionary, Allopathic medicine is defined as, ‘The system of medical practice which treats disease by the use of remedies [read Pharmaceuticals] which produce effects different from those produced by the disease under treatment. M.D.s practice allopathic medicine’.” (Quote taken from the Johns Hopkins University Office of Pre-Professional Programs & Advising article entitled ” Allopathic Medicine M.D.“)
We wouldn’t even know how these kinds of Doctors differ if we hadn’t recently discovered one of the best health websites on the internet called Critical Health News, which is comprised of three very outspoken and highly informed Naturopathic Doctors whose goal it is to help everyone understand that the body can and will heal itself if given the right nutritional support and supplements so it can.
Allopathic Doctors get little to no education in the field of nutrition. They believe pharmaceutical drugs are the answer to all of our ills. Naturopaths believe their is a divine intelligence that can and will heal the body without pharmaceuticals if the body is given the right nutritional support.
For decades Naturopathy has been delegated to the back seat of the Health Care Bus; but times are changing. There are now 17 States, Washington DC and the United States territories of Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands that have licensing or regulation laws for Naturopathic doctors. Those states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
If you live in any of the above states, you have a choice about who you want to consult about your health. Now, at least, you know there are two kinds of Doctors from which to choose. Pardon the digression here. We just felt it was important to share the well kept secret that Naturopathy exists and is growing in popularity.

So what “not normal” action did we take? We went to Walmart.
We’re not recommending that you follow in our footsteps. We’re just sharing here; and now you know we’re not the kind of people who place medical doctors on pedestals especially not Allopathic ones who know little to nothing about the importance of nutrition. According to Joel D. Wallach, the Naturopathic Doctor and founder of Critical Health News and a person who was undiscovered by us at the time, “Diabetes is a nutritional disease caused by the lack of the 90 essential nutrients that the body needs daily.” So without Dr. Wallach’s alternative products, which we’ll be adding to our regimen and reporting on soon, we started our journey back to health by going to Walmart where we purchased one of those little Blood Glucose Monitors pictured above.
This trip to Walmart happened on April 13th of this year, 2015, much to my surprise when I checked our Blood Glucose Recording Journal to write this Newsletter. I could have sworn we did that first test in early October (time warping is on the rise). At that time, we did not even test my Blood Glucose levels.
It cost $18 to buy this little machine, and YES! It requires pricking your finger and getting one little drop of blood, which takes all of 3 minutes to do.
We got our little machine home and did the test. That’s when that not so innocent number, 367, showed up for Oliver (it was an “After Lunch” measurement). Now I have to explain what this number means and the importance of the Before/After Food designation. Suffice it to say, this wasn’t good news. In fact, as I write this, I’m realizing just how terrible that news really was.

Oliver and our cat, Tiger, see his Blood Glucose number for the first time.

I, Grace, took some comic liberty when I created this image because this wasn’t exactly Oliver’s reaction nor was it mine when we saw that first number, 367. We knew it wasn’t good and that something had to change; but what we did was absolutely NOTHING!
Wait a minute. That’s not true. What we did was-WE WENT INTO DENIAL! You know that river in Egypt where things have gotten quite dangerous lately. That’s where we hung out for FIVE MONTHS!

Five Months! EGAD! Now that I’m realizing and confessing this, I’m shocked. Like I said earlier, I had no idea we had waited that long to take action after doing that first Blood Glucose measurement. We definitely don’t want you to follow that example; but we do redeem ourselves, and that redemption started in mid September.

“Hey, Aren’t You People Forgetting Something???”

So one day, after hanging out on Denial River for five months with the dangerous crocodiles symbolizing Diabetes, we woke up. By now, it was September 18th and we did another measurement. This time we also measured my Blood Glucose levels. Oliver was at 339, and I was at 128. Those two measurements were done after fasting through the night, so we placed our numbers in the “Before Breakfast” column of our Recording Journal. This is an important distinction as compared to measurements done after eating food. Here’s why and here’s how to interpret these numbers. Hang in here as this can get a little complicated.
Us Americans don’t seem to measure anything along with the rest of the world and Blood Glucose levels are no exception. “In the U.S., blood sugars are measured by weight in milligrams per deciliter, abbreviated as mg/dL. Most everyone else uses millimole per liter, abbreviated mmol. If you are in the U.S., look at the big numbers, most everyone else look at the small numbers.”
“In a person without diabetes, [before a meal] blood sugars tend to stay between 70 and 100 mg/dL (3.8 and 5.5 mmol). After a meal, blood sugars can rise up to 140 mg/dL or 7.8 mmol. It will typically fall back into the normal range within two hours.” (Quote taken from the Diabetes Daily website article entitled “Is My Blood Sugar Normal?“) So you can see right away that Oliver’s original 367 is over two and a half times higher than the highest normal number after a meal.
“In a person with diabetes, the story is much more complex: [It seems Diabetics make drastic swings from]:
Low Blood Sugars (Hypoglycemia).  When blood sugars drop below this level, you may start feeling hunger, shakiness, or racing of the heart. Your body is starved for sugar (glucose). This is below 70 mg/dL or below 3.8 mmol.
Normal Blood Sugar. In this range, the body is functioning normally. In someone without diabetes, the vast majority of the time is spent in the lower half of this range. This is 70 mg/dL to 140 mg/dL or 3.8 mmol to 7.7 mmol.
Elevated Blood Sugars. In this range, the body can function relatively normally. However, extended periods of time in this zone put you at risk for long-term complications. This is 140 mg/dL to 180 mg/dL or 7.7 mmol to 10 mmol.
High Blood Sugars. At this range, the kidney is unable to reabsorb all of the glucose in your blood and you begin to spill glucose in your urine. Your body may begin to turn to fat for energy and release ketones in your urine. (You can purchase strips to test your urine for ketones. Contact your doctor immediately if you have ketones in your urine.) This is above 180 mg/dL or above 10 mmol.”

(Quote taken from the Diabetes Daily website article entitled “Is My Blood Sugar Normal?“)

We’ve all heard of Diabetic Comas. They happen when there have been “prolonged blood sugar extremes – blood sugar that’s either too high or too low for too long – may cause various conditions, all of which can lead to a diabetic coma.”
“If your blood sugar level tops 600 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 33.3 millimoles per liter (mmol/L), the condition is known as diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome.”
“When your blood sugar gets this high, your blood becomes thick and syrupy. The excess sugar passes from your blood into your urine, which triggers a filtering process that draws tremendous amounts of fluid from your body.”
“Left untreated, diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome can cause life-threatening dehydration and a diabetic coma. Diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome is most common in middle-aged and older adults who have type 2 diabetes.” (Quotes taken from the Mayo Clinic website article entitled ” Diabetic coma“)
The more I write about this frightening condition, the scarier and more serious it gets, so let’s get on with what we’re doing about it now that we have awakened from our dance of Denial.

We Ordered the Diabetes Destroyer Program through Click Bank.

Now some of you may think we’re just plain crazy because the author of this eBook isn’t even a Doctor. However, we want to remind you that we’ve already noted that Allopathic Doctors, which are most of our MD’s here in the U.S., don’t do Nutrition. This eBook is all about Nutrition so how or why would it be coming from a Doctor?  We discovered the Diabetes Destroyer before we discovered Joel D. Wallach, BS, DVM, ND over at Critical Health News. Had we discovered Mr. Wallach first, we may not have gone down this road.
So exactly what is this Program prescribing? First, we need to tell you what it’s not prescribing–DRUGS! There’s nary a drug in sight. The Diabetes Destroyer is all about good food, good exercise and good common sense. We’re not going to go into the particulars of the this Program here. If you have Diabetes or suspect you may have it or suspect you are Pre-Diabetic, this Program certainly can’t hurt you, and it might even help. We’re not here to advertise it nor are we getting a kick back (like Doctors get when they prescribe drugs) for promoting it. We’re simply sharing our experiment and our results.
Here’s how it went. In mid September, we made a serious Commitment to follow the Diabetes Destroyer Program. We created a binder where we placed our downloaded eBook, and I designed a cover for it. We both signed that cover before slipping it into the clear plastic on the front of the binder. The Program required we do a Juice Fast for 7 days. The Juice Fast was about cleansing the body and getting it ready for the next step, which is 2 Months on a vegetarian diet. This vegetarian diet cuts out all meats including fish and chicken, dairy, gluten, sugar and emphasizes low carbs, which means no potatoes. Yes, it’s a pretty drastic diet. If you’re going to fight Diabetes, you’ve got to be willing to make big changes. We have continued to eat eggs, and we haven’t been perfect. But for the most part, we have been able to stick to the diet. It has definitely cramped our habit of eating out. The area where we need a lot of work is the exercise part. We are having a really hard time bringing that in on a consistent basis so our numbers will be better once we do.

How Have the Numbers Been Going?

Before we talk about our results so far, we need to share some background information about our eating habits before we started the Diabetes Destroyer Program. Neither one of us were red meat eaters. We both had quit eating it around 15 years ago, before we met each other. Neither did we eat pork, veal or lamb. Our meat of choice was Chicken, and we ate a lot of it. We also ate fish; but have never been able to kill and eat our own fish. As a result, we have some of the biggest tilapia on the planet, and our neighbor’s chickens feel a lot more relaxed since we went on the Program.
You needed to know this because it’s about setting a baseline. We came from a different baseline than most Americans who eat red meat, pork, lamb, veal, fish and chicken so it was easier for us to make the leap into vegetarianism.
We were also big cheese eaters. We loved our nightly cheese and cracker treats; and I had gotten into a crazy daily bottle of root beer habit. That all had to go, and until now, we were heavy into gluten which included breads, pastas, pizza and all the other common gluten delivery foods. My biggest problem was what in the world was I going to cook given all of these restrictions. I had no idea, but the one thing I did know is I was going to have to spend a lot more time cooking things from scratch.
And I was going to have to put myself through a crash course in vegetarian cooking. I purchased three Vegetarian Cook Books, and we went to Vons [read Safeway] where the greatest number of organic vegetables are being offered in our sleepy little California desert town. We also went to our local Health Food Store and clumsily dove into several of those mysterious see-through bins with names like quinoa, lentels, mung beans, flaxseed, black chia seeds, all with the word “organic” in front of them. We also purchased organic nuts–natural nuts without the salt.
Before launching this new vegetarian eating program, the only thing I knew about chia seeds was they created this silly grass-covered ceramic Christmas product, the Chia Pet that we’ll be seeing all over the place soon.
So now we’re actually going to be eating these seeds and a whole lot of other foreign sounding things for a minimum of two months. Really?
Yes, really, and it’s working. Here are our numbers as of November 10th, 2015 after being on the Program for almost a month and a half.
Oliver’s Blood Glucose Recording Journal presently reads 174 in the Before Breakfast column. On September 18th, it read 339. You’ll remember the big, bad number 367 was a Before Lunch reading so it can’t be used in these comparisons. Subtracting 174 from 339 results in a 165 point DROP. He has also dropped 15lbs. Good things are happening. My Blood Glucose Recording Journal reads 107 in the Before Breakfast column. On September 18th, it read 128 so I have dropped 21points and went from tight size 10 pants to comfortable size 8 pants. I have to drop 7 more points to get into the high end of the normal zone. I also want to get back into my size 6 pants. Oliver’s not out of the woods yet by any stretch of the imagination. He needs to drop 74 points to get into the normal zone.
On October 23, Oliver was down to 160, so he backslid. What happened was his cook, me, Grace, left home for 10 Days in early November, and Oliver lost ground. We’re learning as we go. It’s kind of like how we started with Aquaponics. We learned it, and then we taught it to others. I’m leaving again and will be gone for 20 days this time. Oliver gets it that he has to do better on his own. Because of this Newsletter, he has a new goal–that 100 Before Breakfast number. We’ll share our numbers again when I get back and write our December Newsletter.
As usual, my intention for this Newsletter was to invite you into our new Vegetarian Kitchen and share all the wonderful things we’ve learned about vegetarian cooking. Obviously, we’re not getting there this month so guess what’s coming in December.

Coming in December! Welcome to our Vegetarian Kitchen!

This is one of the first things I cooked on our new STOP DIABETES Program. It’s a basic vegetable soup. Up on the counter are canisters full of the once mysterious stuff in those see-through serve yourself bins. We’ll tell you what’s in those canisters and what else we’ve discovered to make being vegetarians not only tolerable but enjoyable and fun. We hope to see you again next month.
EGAD! Next month is DECEMBER! How did that happen. The Holidays are here; and for most Americans that’s the worst time of the year for their bodies which get stuffed full of all of that sugar. If the truth be known, we would bet that many pre-diabetics step over the line into full blown diabetes during the Holidays. If you suspect you’re on the border, don’t do what we did and wait 5 Months. Take action today.
Thank You for following our Newsletters. We so appreciate your interest in our two cutting edge Aquaponics Companies, Aquaponics USA and Aquaponics Wold, LLC. We’ll continue to bring you important information about Aquaponics, our Food and our U.S. Food System, which, right now, is broken and has turned us into subjects of Big Food.
Please help us turn the tables around so we can declare our Food Freedom again and become the healthiest country on the planet instead of the sickest.
Sustainably,

A Word from our Editor, Grace Sylke
We’re not done with this Series, Obesity In America, yet; but we can see a conclusion; and it looks like December will be it.
Watch for our last two entries in this our longest Series yet which will have Nine Parts when we’re finished.
This October issue is the last of the Artificial and Substitute Sugar information, which pretty much has caused us to realize it’s time to “Make It From Scratch” because Big Food is NEVER going to back away from the poisons they’re putting out there disguised as healthy
products. They’re even allowed to put the word “Natural” on some of the worst products imaginable.
We’re All eating at our own peril, and our kitchens have become war zones where Big Food unleashes chemically laden poisons with delayed and slow death technology placed inside waiting for us to consume them.

We promise this will be the last Newsletter about Artificial Sweeteners, but it won’t be the last Newsletter in the Series on Obesity In AMERICA.
We’re saving the announcement of the surprise November Newsletter topic within this Series for later in this Newsletter. For now, let us just say, what we’re going to share in our November Newsletter even surprised us.
Now back to those ubiquitous Artificial and Substitute Sweeteners. These toxic substances have become so prevalent that a new disease called Artificial Sweetener Disease (ASD) has been named to describe the many maladies being reported to the FDA over the past decade, and an award winning film called “Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World”, describes the unprecedented rise in brain tumors, diabetes and a once rare brain lymphoma. The culprit, as suggested by the doctors in this documentary, is the introduction and massive ingestion of Aspartame by the American people in their quest to avoid actual sugar, which is called sucrose.  You can watch this documentary below:
Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World
Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World

We opened this can of worms in August thinking we were only going to discuss Aspartame. Then we discovered it had so many evil octuplets that we also had to discuss them to do justice to the subject. Now, two months later, we are addressing the last four Artificial and Substitute Sweeteners on our list. They are Acesulfame K, Advantame, Sucralose and Stevia, and in many ways, it’s the same sad story. So here goes.

Let’s start with answering this interesting question. What in the world does Acesulfame K have to do with Lake Erie?

A Canadian environmental company tested the water from the Grand River [in Canada] at 23 different sites between it’s originating waters and its destination waters where it dumps into Lake Erie and what they found was very telling. This company found that the artificial sweetener, Acesulfame K, is able to evade wastewater treatment and come out at the other end of a treatment plant in much higher concentrations than either saccharin or sucralose. We’ll be talking about sucralose below; and we’ve already discussed saccharin in our August Newsletter; but the question we need to be asking ourselves right now is this: If Acesulfame K can’t even be broken down by a wastewater treatment plant, how are our bodies dealing with it? And with a name like that, what the heck is it anyway? (Information taken from Wikipedia Page on Acesulfame potasium)
The letter K is the symbol for potassium so we know it has potassium in it. No problem there. “In chemical structure, Acesulfame Potassium is the potassium salt of 6-methyl-1,2,3-oxathiazine-4(3H)-on2,2-dioxide. It is a white crystalline powder with molecular formula C4H4KNO4S.” Really? Without even knowing what that means, we’re opting to forego the pleasure of ACK’s 200 times sweeter than sugar rush. (Quote taken from Wikipedia Page on Acesulfame potassium)
By this point in our research regarding these Artificial and Substitute sugars, we just have to admit we’re not feeling positive about any of them; and are hoping that at least Stevia, which sits in our cupboard right now, has some redeeming qualities [to be determined, below]. But we digress.
There’s chatter on the internet about Acesulfame K containing Methylene Chloride. So let’s start there. What is Methylene Chloride? According to the US Department of Labor, Methylene Chloride “is a volatile, colorless liquid with a chloroform-like odor. Methylene chloride is used in various industrial processes, in many different industries including paint stripping, pharmaceutical manufacturing, paint remover manufacturing, and metal cleaning and degreasing. The most common means of exposure to methylene chloride is inhalation and skin exposure. OSHA considers methylene chloride to be a potential occupational carcinogen.” So, there you have it. Methylene Chloride is a dangerous industrial chemical. (Quote taken from  US Dept. of Labor website page on Methylene Chloride)
And because this Artificial Sweetener, just like most of the others, is an industrial product that is manufactured, Methylene Chloride is used “as a solvent in the initial manufacturing step of the sweetener.” (Quote taken from a page on the Dept. of Health and Human Services, FDA, Docket No. 2002F-0220 regarding Food Additives Permitted for Direct Addition to Food for Human Consumption; Acesulfame Potassium)
The FDA goes on to justify it’s approval of Acesulfame K for food based on it’s “assumed” conclusion that “methylene chloride is present in ACK at the LOD of 40 ppb (worst-case scenario) and has evaluated its safety by performing a risk assessment for methylene chloride based on this level.” (Quote taken from a page on the Dept. of Health and Human Services, FDA, Docket No. 2002F-0220 regarding Food Additives Permitted for Direct Addition to Food for Human Consumption; Acesulfame Potassium)
Unlike Aspartame, which carries a warning label, Acesulfame K does not have to appear on food labels. “In the United States, Acesulfame Potassium is approved for use in candies, tabletop sweeteners, chewing gums, beverages, dessert and dairy product mixes, baked goods, alcoholic beverages, syrups, refrigerated and frozen desserts, and sweet sauces and toppings.” (Quote taken from Nutrition Express online article entitled Everything You Need To Know About Acesulfame Potassium)
When we buy any of the above processed foods, we most likely are getting a dose of Acesulfame K and we have no way of knowing that. We don’t know about you; but we’re getting more and more convinced we not only need to grow our own food, we need to make our own food from scratch just like Grandma did before Big Food took over.
On the other hand, if you think your intestines need a little stripping or degreasing, then Acesulfame K is the perfect product for you; and there’s the added bonus that it’s as sweet as hell.

Choose your Poison–Aspartame or Advantame?

If you need to be reminded of the horrors of Aspartame, just click over to our August Newsletter before meeting Aspartame’s evil twin, Advantame. Advantame is the new kid on the Artificial Sweetener block, and it really packs a wallop being 20,000 times sweeter than sugar and 100 times sweeter than it’s twin, Aspartame. Do we really need a product that is 20,000, that’s TWENTY
THOUSAND times sweeter than sucrose (sugar)?
Advantame is derived from Aspartame and Vanillin so let’s find out what the heck Vanillin is. The word looks a lot like Vanilla; but it’s different. Vanillin is synthetic vanilla. We all know what vanilla is and have been putting it in homemade frosting for years. It’s what makes frosting so sweet. But Vanilla is not sugar. It actually comes from a bean. “Vanilla bean pods grow in areas such as Madagascar and Tahiti, just to name a couple of the most popular locations they’re produced. The beans are left to dry in the sun and cured, which is when their flavor develops.” (Quote taken from the One Green Planet website article entitled Vanilla Versus Vanillin: What You Need to Know)
Vanillin is, you guessed it, chemically produced to mimic the taste of vanilla; and believe it or not, “most of the synthetic vanillin is made from guaiacol, which is a petrochemical precursor”. PETROCHEMICAL! Egad!
(Quote taken from the Honey and Spice website article entitled What is Vanillin?)
So it’s not enough that we’re having to deal with a labeled Artificial Sweetener like Aspartame with all of its body threatening issues, we’ve now been given an unlabeled derivative of Aspartame that is full of petrochemicals. Big Food just keeps coming up with the next best POISON for its constituents. In the case of Advantame, the Big Food company that’s making it is in Japan and it’s called the Ajinomoto Company; and so far, we haven’t been able to find a Brand name associated with it but it won’t be long before there is one. The bastardizing of our food system is a worldwide money making opportunity for any company that wants to get into the act. But that’s not the worst of it. This nightmare just keeps getting scarier.
Just when we thought we’d completed this part of our research on Advantame and it’s synthetic Vanillin component, we ran into this frightening bogey man, a twist on Synthetic Vanillin, which is called Synthetic Biology Vanillin. They stick the word Biology into the name and think they’re going to fool the fools again. Now, we’re getting mad.

Synthetic Biology Vanillin is a GMO form of Synthetic Vanillin. Just put the words Synthetic and Biology together and you get the correct picture–extreme genetic engineering–brought to you buy a company called Evolva teamed up with the IFF (International Flavors and Fragrances). Apparently, these folks think it’s time we eat our perfume.

” Vanilla is one of the most widely used flavors in our food, and therefore this new application is in the spotlight of the public controversy. Synthetic biology vanillin would be one of the biggest, high profile uses of this new experimental genetic technology in our food system. It will set a precedent allowing for the use of this technology to create other synthetic biology food derivatives such as orange and grapefruit flavoring, coconut oils, and saffron. Already, a synthetic biology produced animal feed ingredient has been approved by the FDA based solely on the company’s claim that the product is safe.” (Quote taken from a Fiends of the Earth pdf entitled  Synthetic Biology Vanillin: not natural, not sustainable, not likely to be labeled, and coming to an ice-cream cone near you)
The GMO Genie has gotten out of the bottle and is fornicating and pro-creating–mis-creating, as in miscreant, a much better word here. We now have to become aware of the other Big Food Companies besides Monsanto that have entered the dark world of Genetically Engineered Foods and Food Additives. In fact, once we’ve finished this Series on Obesity in AMERICA, we now know what our next Series will be–The Dark World of GMO’s.

On to the next POISON, Sucralose with it’s popular brand, Splenda.

“If you were told to ingest a biologically alien synthetic chemical whose presence on this planet did not predate 1976, and whose structure is only a few atoms away from the deadly pesticide DDT, and you knew that not only were there no long term human safety studies performed on it, but that it had been already proven in tests to have the following adverse health effects:
· Shrunken thymus glands (up to 40% shrinkage)
· Enlarged liver and kidneys.
· Reduced growth rate
· Decreased red blood cell count
· Aborted pregnancy (Maternal & Fetal Toxicity)
· Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights
· Increase glycosylation of hemoglobin (HbA1c) for    diabetics
Would you still consume it?” We all know what your answer would be; but the sad truth is that millions of people are consuming a product that perfectly fits these horrific criteria and it’s called Splenda. (Quote taken from Green Medinfo article entitled The Bitter Truth About Splenda)
A big thanks to Green Medinfo for doing all this incredible research on Splenda, which is a very popular brand name for an Artificial Sweetener known as Sucralose. Other brand names for Sucralose are Zerocal, Sukrana, SucraPlus, Candys, Cukren, and Nevella as this Sweetener is being sold all over the world. In the EU, the E number for Sucralose is E955. (Information taken from the Wikipedia page on Sucralose)
Sucralose is between 320 to 1,000 times sweeter than Sugar, twice as sweet as Saccharin and three times as sweet as Aspartame. It “was discovered in 1976 by scientists from  Tate & Lyle, working with researchers Leslie Hough and Shashikant Phadnis at  Queen Elizabeth College (now part of  King’s College London). While researching ways to use sucrose and its synthetic derivatives for industrial use, Phadnis was told to test a chlorinated sugar compound. Phadnis thought Hough asked him to taste it, so he did. He found the compound to be exceptionally sweet” and Sucralose was born. It was approved by the FDA in 1998. (Quote taken from the Wikipedia page on Sucralose)
If you look at the Splenda label above, you see that it’s made from sugar, which is true. It’s what is done to the natural sugar that is highly questionable. Sucralose is produced by chlorinating sucrose (sugar) turing sugar into an organochlorine compound (an organic compound that has been chlorinated). CHLORINATED! Now we’re ingesting something out of our swimming pools.
“The human body is very good at detoxifying itself of certain substances, but this is not the case with organochlorine compounds. Dioxin, one organochlorine compound that is a by-product of the paper bleaching process, is 300,000 times more carcinogenic than DDT, an insecticide that was banned because of its toxicity. These compounds have been linked to birth defects, cancer, and immune dysfunction.”
“These chemicals stay in the body and accumulate over time. According to the Sucralose Toxicity Information Center, the absorbed sucralose and its metabolites (chemically altered substances) concentrate in the liver, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract. Splenda manufacturers claim there is minimal absorption of Splenda and its metabolites. The FDA says there is only 11 percent to 27 percent absorption, but the Japanese Food Sanitation Council says as much as 40 percent is absorbed by the body.” (Quote taken from a Down to Earth website article entitled Is Sucralose a Dangerous Sugar Substitute?
Do we really want to bet our health on the Japanese Food Sanitation Council being wrong and the manufacturer of Splenda being right? If 40% of these toxic chemicals in Sucralose are being absorbed by the body, that body is  becoming a vat of poison from head to toe.

Then there’s Stevia!

Before I do any research on Stevia, let me remind you that we’ve already confessed it’s in our cupboard; and we’re holding up a lot of hope that out of all of those toxic Artificial and Substitute Sugars that we’ve been researching for months, Stevia is going to be our saving grace. Look at it. It’s a sweet (quite literally), innocent plant that couldn’t hurt anyone. Right? Let’s see.
Suffering Suckertash! The first thing that comes up is a problem. “The active compounds of stevia are steviol glycosides, which have up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar. In the United States, stevia was banned in 1991 after early studies found that it might be carcinogenic; after additional studies, the FDA approved some specific glycoside extracts for use as food additives” in 2008.
It’s been used in South and Central America for centuries; but that usage was Stevia in its natural form by either eating the actual leaves of the plant or grinding the leaves into a powder. Modern, industrialized technology turns Stevia and lots of other once natural products into toxic concoctions that bear little resemblance to their former natural state. More on that later.
The European Union approved Stevia additives in 2011, and in Japan, Stevia has been widely used as a sweetener for decades. The Japanese have been using it in food products, soft drinks like Coca Cola and as a table sugar. Japan currently consumes more Stevia than any other country, with Stevia accounting for 40% of the sweetener market. (Quotes taken from the Wikipedia page on Stevia)
Then there’s the same old story we mentioned earlier about what Big Food companies end up doing to a natural plant like Stevia before putting it into their products like Coca Cola or Pepsi. “They have formulated processes for extracting the sweetest ingredients from the stevia plant leaf. This process of chemical extraction renders the original form of the stevia herb virtually unrecognizable. Because they are extracted or derived chemically, there may be present other chemical byproducts and/or residues which may be harmful.” (Quote taken from Culture of Awareness Website article entitled Beverage Companies Mislead Consumers with Processed Stevia)
There are also a few whispers about Stevia being “a mutagen in the presence of a liver extract of pre-treated rats. In other words, it could create changes in the DNA of the liver, up to and including cancer. The study, however, was widely criticized by scientists who claimed the study was conducted in a way that would also find distilled water mutagenic, and largely discarded by health food aficionados, who continued to buy stevia powder in stores where it was marketed as a ‘dietary supplement’ thanks to a ban by the U.S. FDA” until 2008. (Quote taken from Daily Finance website article entitled Stevia shakes up the sweetener wars)
The sweetness in Stevia “comes from two primary steviol glycosides, stevioside and rebaudioside. Rebaudioside is the sweetest (350-450 times the sweetness of table sugar) and least bitter part of the leaf, while stevioside (250-300 times the sweetness of table sugar) has that bitter aftertaste many people complain about. That’s why some processed brands like Truvia and PureVia isolate rebaudioside and use it solely while other ‘natural’ or ‘raw’ stevia brands use the full spectrum of glycosides. And as you might suspect, problems arise when brands process the plant and add wierd substances to the mix.”
Finally, here’s some good news about Stevia–really good news!

1. Stevia and Diabetes: Stevia “looks like an ideal all-around saviour for diabetic patients.” This is the conclusion that Regev Elya came to in a Blog (by the same name) article entitled What Is Stevia? Side Effects, Safety Dangers and Health Benefits as a Natural Sweetener. This conclusion was based on the results of numerous research studies she reviewed, which you can look at yourself when you click over to the above link.
2. Stevia and Memory: One independent study found that rats that were given a memory debilitating substance could reverse the memory impairment when given stevioside and it concluded that “stevioside exerts a memory-preservative effect in cognitive deficits of rats”.
3. Stevia and Cholesterol: In another study, “researchers studying long-term feeding effects of stevioside sweetener on some toxicological parameters of growing male rats found that stevia taken alone in low-doses lowered cholesterol and was deemed safe to use and without any toxicological effects on body weight, organ relative weight, haematological and biochemical parameters or enzyme activities, though high-doses (1500mg/kg, an amount unrealistic outside the lab) did increase some toxic parameters”.

4. Stevia and Blood Pressure: Then there’s the Chinese study of humans rather than rats  in  China   in which  after  two  years,   researchers “found out that an
intake of 500mg oral stevioside three times a day significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to placebo. Their hypertension situation improved and there were no reported or detected side effects. Interesting enough, less patients in the stevioside-group developed left ventricular hypertrophy, a pathological thickening of the heart muscle.”
5. Stevia and Atherosclerosis: In yet another study using rats, “researchers fed 12-week old mice with 10mg/kg dose of stevioside next to a placebo group and found out that stevioside inhibits atherosclerosis by improving insulin signaling and antioxidant defense in obese insulin-resistant mice.”

“The mice had lower glucose and insulin levels, improved adipose tissue maturation and increased glucose transport, insulin signalling and antioxidant defense. They also had lower oxidised-LDL (“bad cholesterol”) and thus reduced  atherosclerotic plaque buildup.”

6. Stevia and Cancer: In complete opposition to the early study that suggested Stevia could be carcinogenic, “one  Japanese study from the National Institute of Health Sciences in Tokyo studied 50 male and 50 female rats in three groups for a period of two years. The results showed that ” females who took stevioside had a reduced occurrence of breast cancer tumours, and males showed a lesser severity of kidney damage. Also, the stevioside-fed rats weighted slightly less, which makes sense since stevioside has no calories or a glycemic response.”

“Other Japanese researchers studied the inhibitory effect of stevioside on tumor promotion and found steviol glycosides [including] stevioside, rebaudioside A, rebaudioside C and dulcoside A  to posses a marked inhibitory effect against inflammation and tumour promotion.” The results showed 73% and 96% reductions! WOW! But the researchers weren’t surprised because they understand that “a series of naturally occurring components of Compositae plants has been found to possess antitumor-promoting activities’ “; and the Stevia plant is one of them.
Bottom line regarding the Stevia and Cancer story is this: “Cancer, above all other diseases, has countless secondary causes. But, even for cancer, there is only one prime cause. Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar.” (Quote taken from Otto H. Warburg, 1931 nobel prize winner)
Sugar is food for Cancer! Take away it’s food source and Cancer starves. That means eliminate sugar from your diet; and replace it with Stevia? Not so fast. We haven’t come to that conclusion just yet; but things are looking up for our innocent little Stevia plant.
7. Stevia and Reproduction: The CONS
There’s one more little obstacle in Stevia’s way of being a medical miracle herb–studies that show it has a negative effect on Male and Female Reproduction. Oh Dear! Anything but that!
There was this study by Professor Joseph Kuc way back in 1968, which he conducted after hearing old wives tales of South American women using Stevia as a contraceptive. Remember, Stevia’s been used in South and Central America for centuries. Kuc decided to test out any contraceptive properties of Stevia and he found

“a visible and relatively long-term reduction in the number of offspring born to female rats he fed with a stevia solution.”
“Professor Kuc does admit that his results aren’t necessarily valid for humans. First, he used some material from the stevia plant that isn’t ordinarily consumed along with his boiled stevia leaf extract. Second, he let his rats drink that mixture in such a high rate, equalling a person drinking about 2.5 litters of liquid in less than half an hour. And third, he used only one dosage level and not a variety of doses to establish what is known as a ‘dose-response’ relationship.” We’re leaving any conclusion regarding this study strictly up to you. As for us, we’re not planning on having wee ones in our future.
Another study found that there was a possibility that Stevia extracts may decrease the fertility of male rats. And yet another study “found  a 60% decrease in seminal vesicle weight in rats compared to a control group”.

8. Stevia and Reproduction: The PROS

The first Pro Stevia study comes from a research center in Bangkok, which used hamsters in place of rats. “They used four groups of ten male and ten female one-month old hamsters and fed the first group with a daily 500mg/kg dose of stevioside, second group 1,000mg/kg, third group 2,500mg/kg  and fourth group with 0, serving as the control group. These are amounts that far surpass the daily consumption of an average human estimated to be about 2-5mg.”
The results showed “there was no significant difference between the average growth of either of the groups, and there was no difference at all between reproductive fitness and mating performance – no matter the dose of stevioside. Mating was efficient and successful in all groups, without any growth or fertility abnormality of either sex.”
A second Stevia study “achieved similar findings where stevia extract didn’t affect male body weight, testicular weights and sperm count, morphology and motility. The researchers concluded that it has no toxic effect on male reproduction, at least in rats.”
So now we have two groups of conflicting research studies in the area of Stevia and Reproduction. This is when more research is called for; and we’re all on our own regarding our Stevia ingesting decisions.

8. Stevia and Allergic Reactions: Of course there’s a small group of people who should stay away from Stevia altogether due to being allergic to it. Most of these folks are also allergic to plants in the Compositae or Asteraceae family like chrysanthemus, marigolds, ragweed or daisies. (All Quotes in this section (except for the Quote from Otto H. Warburg) came from the Regevelya Blog article entitled  What Is Stevia? Side Effects, Safety Dangers and Health Benefits as a Natural Sweetener)

The Stevia Story was a long one with a lot of big scientific and hard to pronounce words. It seems to be impossible to talk briefly or simply about these Artificial and Substitute Sweeteners, which is why we’ve been on this important subject since August.
As for coming to a conclusion regarding the use of Stevia, it was looking a little scary for a while. Last night, we were even considering dumping all of our Stevia and taking the Stevia exception off of our cover image; but once we found the excellently researched Blog post by Michele at regevelya.com, the tables turned; and we’re feeling that Stevia is our personal answer for a sugar Substitute. But you’re going to have to make up your own mind; and remember to pay attention to what your body has to say if you decide to give Stevia a try.
Now, let’s take a quick look at which Stevia products to use given you make a decision to Substitute it for sugar.
1. Use your own home grown plant.
2. Use Stevia Leaf or Powder that’s organic
3. Don’t use Stevia products that have been processed or combined with other things.
4. Read your Labels
5. Beware of Liquid Stevia. No telling how it was processed.

What’s Coming in our November Newsletter? Obesity In America, Part 8, A Personal Story

When we started this Newsletter, we promised you a big surprise coming in November and here it is. We’re going to share a very personal story about what we’ve been up to since early October. We’ve been on a
STOP Diabetes Program that’s really working.
That’s right. We’re not going to just talk about any old Diabetic relief program. Talk is cheap. We’re going to share the STOP Diabetes Program we put ourselves on to serve as guinea pigs to see if the program really works.
We’re going to share the Commitment we made, why we made it and how it’s all going including the numbers–blood sugar, blood pressure and weight over time.
We’re also going to share how we turned our kitchen and Grace’s limited cooking skills into a vegetarian’s dream using three little Crock Pots, some great Cook Books and a whole gang of newly discovered foods.
We’re so looking forward to seeing you in November and sharing this story.

It’s been delayed again; but it’s coming in March.

We promised to publish this List way back in August; and it still hasn’t materialized. It turned out that the debut month for this list was March. The good news is, as time passes, the List gets longer. Thank You for your patience.
As we finally complete these Newsletters about Artificial and Substitute Sweeteners, we’re happy we were able to end on a positive note regarding Stevia. We’re still quite mind blown to discover this gargantuan market full of toxic horrors that people are blindly purchasing thinking they are helping themselves deal with weight and diabetic issues. We have said before, but it’s worth stating again, people with diabetes have become unwitting targets of Big Food companies who are preying on them as unique consumers and selling them dangerous, unhealthy products by the bushel.
Please FORWARD this email to your colleagues, friends and family who need to become aware of the dangers of toxic Artificial and Substitute Sweeteners. We can’t make the changes we need to make without first understanding why the changes are so important. We can save lives with this information.

Thank You for following our Newsletters. We so appreciate your interest in our two cutting edge Aquaponics Companies, Aquaponics USA and Aquaponics Wold, LLC.
