Obesity in America! Part 1

Dear Subscriber:

We purposely chose to use cartoon images to illustrate this subject not because we believe it’s a joke; but because the seriousness of it needed to be toned down so the information could be digested and not rejected. Pictures of actual people (our loved ones) would be too real and too heart-breaking to look at.

This year’s end, Part 1 of a Series entitled “Obesity In America”, is an exploration into the number one health challenge facing our nation and the world today-Obesity.
And one of the most horrifying statistics is this:
the U.S. is at the top of the List of the 10 Most Obese Countries in the World. We usually take great pride in being at the top of Worldwide Lists; but toping this particular List is an embarrassing and heart-breaking travesty. Here’s that infamous line up:

Top 10 Most Obese Countries:

1. United States
2. China
3. India
4. Russia
5. Brazil
6. Mexico
7. Egypt
8. Germany
9. Pakistan
10. Indonesia

This Series is an exploration into how and why this has happened to the once strong, fit and hard working people of the U.S. and what we can do about it.
In the cartoon depiction above, the little man holding onto his side of the bench for dear life wears a country tag around his neck that says “Nepal”, which is a country that has one of the lowest numbers of obese people in the world. When you compare the GDP of the U.S. to that of Nepal, the obvious conclusion is that Nepal is a very poor country and the U.S. is a very rich one, which is part of the cause of this disparity between obese people and thinner people. But the question we need to ask ourselves is this: “Just because we’re one of the world’s richest countries (China’s GDP just surpassed the U.S.), does that mean we have to be the world’s most obese people?” The Pictograph below from the above article by U.S. News & World Report published in late May of 2014 tells us just how bad it’s gotten in the U.S. since 2010.
Over one fourth of our children, over one third of our women and almost one third of our men are now considered to be Obese. This is devastating!
And, as you can see from the infamous List, we’re not alone. As China, the #2 Country on the List, gets richer and spawns a true middle class, they’re waistlines expand right along with ours. Obesity appears to be the scourge of developed nations in the 21st Century.
According to an article published in Fortune in late November of 2014 entitled “Fat – the $2 trillion burden on the world’s economy”, “taking together the costs of healthcare, of lost productivity and other spending needed to mitigate its impact, consulting firm McKinsey reckons the annual cost of obesity fat now tops $2 trillion, or 2.8% of global economic output. That compares with an estimate of $2.1 trillion for war and terrorism, and for smoking, and is way ahead of alcoholism ($1.4 trillion), illiteracy ($1.3 trillion) and even climate change ($1.0 trillion). Twice as many people worldwide live in countries where more die from being too fat than from being undernourished. The most frequent causes of death include heart disease and type-2 diabetes. McKinsey estimates that almost half the world’s adult population could be obese or overweight by 2030 if current trends continue.”

Now back to our main subject, Obesity in America.

Nearly 1 of 5 Deaths in the U.S. is Associated
with Obesity!

We are losing our friends and family members to a silent epidemic that is killing us by the thousands. A new report reveals staggering statistics about the extent to which the obesity epidemic is robbing Americans of their health and longevity. Columbia University and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation examined the real impact of obesity on death rates. The study found that nearly one in five US deaths is associated with obesity, which is more than three times higher than previous estimates.

The effect varies somewhat by your gender, race and age. The younger you are, the greater obesity’s influence on your mortality. And contrary to a previous study, obesity is not protective if you’re elderly. The Columbia study found the following percentage of deaths associated with high BMI (body mass index) of 25 or above (overweight or obesity):

  • Black women: 26.8 percent
  • White women: 21.7 percent
  • White men: 15.6 percent
  • Black men: 5 percent [we believe due to a smaller number of black men compared to black women, white women and white men. There are approximately 3 black women to every 1 black man]

The authors wrote:

“We believe that it is imperative for the US public and those who construct policy for that public to recognize that population health and more than a century of steady gains in life expectancy are being jeopardized by the obesity epidemic. Indeed, evidence has already implicated high rates of obesity as a significant contributor to the United States relatively low life expectancy among high-income countries.”

What’s causing Obesity?

Everyone knows one of the main culprits behind our obesity epidemic is too much Sugar. When it comes to Sugar, we are all Addicts. And, our sugar addiction is getting stronger by the year as that’s the very nature of addiction-addicts crave more and more of the addictive substance.

Here are more startling facts and images about our sugar consumption from “Nursing Your Sweet Tooth” an info-graphic created by Online Nursing Programs. You can see this info-graphic in its entirety in the Forbes article entitled “How Much Sugar Are Americans Eating?”, which was published in late August of 2012. Our images are original art using the Online Nursing Program statistics, which cover 2012. We added some numbers to bring you up to date in 2014, and it isn’t pretty.

This is unbelievable. It’s even more shocking when you see how our sugar consumption has risen over the years. It has gone from 20 Lbs. each annually in 1820 to 150-170 Lbs. each annually in 2014. Taking the middle 2014 number of 160 Lbs. means that we’ve each increased our annual sugar consumption by 140 Lbs.
If you’d like to share these jaw dropping statistics with friends and relatives, go to our Aquaponics World Pinterest Wall where they’ve been posted for sharing.
When we talk about sugar in this Part 1 of the Series, we are using it as “the generalized name for sweet, short-chain, soluble carbohydrates, many of which are used in food. They are carbohydrates, composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. There are various types of sugar derived from different sources. Simple sugars are called monosaccharides and include glucose (also known as dextrose), fructose and galactose.” (Quote taken from Wikipedia’s Sugar Page) We’ll get into defining the various sources of sugar in Parts 2 & 3.

Where is SUGAR hiding in our food environment?

The answer to this question is EVERY WHERE! But here are some specifics regarding the percent of sugar intake for each sugary category whether it be sugar in the form of glucose, fructose or galactose.
1. Soft drinks account for 33%
2. Candy accounts for 16.1%
3. Cakes, Cookies, Pies account for 12.9%
3. Fruit Drinks account for 9.7%
4. Dairy desserts and Milk account for 8.6%
5. Other Grains account for 5.8%
(Statistics taken from Forbes article entitled “How Much Sugar Are American Eating”, which was published in late August of 2012)

Are we all suffering from Sugar Blues?

One of the first alarm bells that was rung about this national addiction was the book by William Dufty called “Sugar Blues”. That book was written in 1986, which was almost 30 years ago. “Sugar Blues” caused quite a stir in its day; but it wasn’t enough to change our behavior or cure our national addiction.
Several authors continue to write these tell-all books about the harmful effects of sugar on the human body-effects so harmful it’s as if we’re all committing Sugar Suicide. This one was published as recently as 2013. Go ahead and click over to Amazon and dare to look inside these books. Still the national addiction rages on. Why?

Big Corporations pushing (quite literally) their drug of choice while even using “druggie” terminology.

We’re all still addicted to sugar because some of the world’s largest corporations are producing these sugary sins and brain washing us from childhood to want them. This is not an excuse for not taking our sugar addiction into our own hands, but it is an explanation as to why it’s so hard to break this very profitable habit. This billboard is advertising “Diet” Coke; but “Diet” Coke is actually worse than “Classic” Coke because it replaces sugar with one of the world’s worst additives, aspertame (that’s a topic for another Part of this Newsletter Series on Obesity in America). Look for it in 2015.
This billborad is equating Coke with “happiness”. Professional Advertisers have gone to school to learn how to motivate the consumer. They equate sugar with fun, joy, happiness, energy, taste and success just to name a few of their favorite buzz words and images. This billboard is saying that Coke tastes “Delicious” and costs only cents all in one word. Of course, the Coca Cola corporation is just one of the many large corporate sugar pushers in our food environment.

How is Fast Food contributing to Obesity in America?

A discussion of Obesity in America wouldn’t be complete without talking about our Fast Food Culture; but not this month. We’re saving that topic for Part 2 of Obesity in America coming in January.
And then there’s the other big contributor to our Obesity problem, high fructose corn syrup, which is one of the forms of sugar that is so deadly. That one also brings in the controversial subject of GMO’s in our diet and how they may be contributing to Obesity.

Newsletter #10: What is USDA Organic? The Organic Industry in the U.S. Part 2

Dear Subscriber:
The timing couldn’t have worked out better if we’d planned it as this third Part of our 3-Part Series on the USDA Organic Industry is all about USDA Certified Organic food from Mexico. Why is the timing auspicious? Because today, November 20, 2014, a date that will go down in the history books, our President will be announcing his sweeping reform of our U.S. Immigration Laws by Executive Order (Uh, No, Not quite. It’s a MEMO instead. Did they say, Memo?). Whatever form it takes, many of the people who will be affected are at the time of this writing, 3PM Pacific Standard Time, illegal immigrants from Mexico sanz Memo.
We are not choosing sides about this hot debate in this Newsletter and gladly remain neutral about this controversial decision by our left leaning President that many believe will ignite a political firestorm coming from the right. What’s important from our perspective is the fact that contrary to the beliefs of many Americans, Mexico is a top exporter to the U.S. of USDA Certified Organic produce and meats. Who would have thought that to be the case? It’s certainly news to us. And the Link up between USDA Organic food from Mexico and immigration is profound and will be explained below. Just keep reading.
Like most of us, we knew a lot of vegetables were coming from Mexico (we weren’t so up on the meat part); but what we didn’t know is that it was adorned by the coveted USDA Certified Label, which as we explained in Part 2 of this Series is a worldwide Label.

Mexico has recently been ranked the #6 most Obese Country out of the top 10. Guess which country is #1. Watch for our December Newsletter about “Obesity in America”.

According to the USDA Foreign Agricultural ServiceGAIN Report written in early 2011, “Mexico is now considered the second [that was in 2011] more obese country in the world and the Mexican government has

made it a priority to reverse this through education campaigns and new food nutrition laws targeting school children.” (Quote taken from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service GAIN Report dated on the last day of 2011)

But things have changed since early 2011 and now according to an article in the Health Section of US News and World Report, Mexico has dropped down to number 6 on the Top Ten List under Brazil, Russia, India, China and the U.S. So the local population is starting to eat healthier; and it looks like the government’s campaign is working. Still 80% of the USDA Certified Organic Food grown is Mexico is grown for export and most of it is coming to the U.S.

Actually, a look at the big cross trading picture is quite interesting because “since NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) was implemented in 1994, total

U.S. exports to Mexico have increased 375 percent, while Mexican exports to the United States have grown 559 percent.” WOW! (Quote taken from USDA Foreign Agricultural Service GAIN Report, dated the last day of 2013)

Pictured below is a small family organic farm in Oaxaca, Mexico. It’s one of many of these small to medium sized family farms that have made Mexico “a top 20 producer of organic foods worldwide”. (Quote taken from the 2011 Gain Report) “Mexico is estimated to have more than 110,000 organic farmers, considered the greatest number in any country of the world. More than 90 percent farm on less than 9 acres and sell their products collectively. On the other end of the spectrum are large, private producers who farm 250 to 5,000 acres.” (Quote taken from PCC Natural Markets article entitled “Questions about Mexican organics?”dated January 2011)

“Mexico is the main producer and largest exporter of organic coffee and the third largest producer of organic honey. Other organic crops grown in Mexico include corn, cacao, avocados, sesame seeds, cactus paddles, vanilla beans, milk, and dairy products. Over the last decade, several efforts had been made by the Mexican government and private sector to promote organic farming. Dozens of outdoor markets (tianguis) and farmer’s markets for organic products have been set up in different regions of Mexico including Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Chiapas where more than 500 small producers gather to sell their products. Market analysts expect this trend to continue growing in the future. Even though organic production represents less that 1% of all agricultural production on surface planted in Mexico, it generates around 10% of the gross domestic product in the agricultural sector with revenues of approximately 300 million USD a year.” (Quote taken from the 2011 Gain Report).

U.S. APHIS Inspectors inspecting broccoli

What’s important to understand is this isn’t a hit piece. It’s a validation of the fact that USDA Certified Organic food from Mexico is subject to the same regulations to which the USDA Certified Organic food from the U.S. is subject. It’s also subject to the same challenges and problems.”For a food to be sold as certified organic in the United States – whether grown in the United States, in Mexico, or anywhere else in the world – it must meet all the requirements of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program. It must be produced without the use of toxic synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or irradiation.

“Perhaps most important, it must be certified by a USDA-accredited agency. Certification includes inspection of farm fields and processing facilities, detailed record keeping of what inputs were applied to the land, and, if there’s cause for concern, soil and water testing. Currently, at least 15 organic certification agencies operate in Mexico.” That’s the good news.

(Quote taken from PCC Natural Markets article entitled “Questions about Mexican organics?” dated January 2011)

The bad news; and there is some. All of the USDA Certified Food from Mexico is subject to inspection. Having the USDA Organic label doesn’t magically get organic operator produce across the U.S. border because other agencies have to be satisfied; and as we described in Part 2 of this series sometimes “Treatments” are required. Treatments are actions that can be ordered by the regulating agency called APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service). APHIS can order that the shipment be Fumigated, Cold Treated, Hot Treated, Irradiated or even Destroyed. Sometimes, if the producer is under a NARP Agreement (North American Research Partnership), these “treatments” happen before the shipment leaves the foreign country from which it is being shipped and paperwork attesting to that fact is presented. If you want to learn more about these “Treatments”, go to Part 2. Apparently, the USDA Certified Organic vegetables from Mexico have a special NARP Agreement in place so the Organic vegetables do not have to be “irradiated”, which would violate the definition of “organic” according to USDA Certification requirements.
Given all the regulations, it’s quite amazing that producers from Mexico actually have been able to jump through all the hoops to import their produce into the U.S. “As demand for organic food in the United States expands, Mexico’s certified organic acreage has been growing at a rate of 32 percent per year. A 2009 study found an annual organic production value of more than $370 million with 80 percent destined for export.”(Quote taken from PCC Natural Markets article entitled “Questions about Mexican organics?” published in early 2011)
Mexico’s advantage is, of course, their tropical weather, which allows fruits and vegetables to be grown year round there.

Jacobs Farm, Del Cabo

This is a story of just one successful producer of organic produce from Mexico, Jacobs Farm, Del Cabo. It’s a 400 plus member strong Organic Farming Cooperative. “Del Cabo’s claim to fame is its flavorful cherry tomatoes and basil, both featured at PCC. All the farms are certified organic by Oregon Tilth [an accredited USDA Certifying Agency] and tested for food safety byPrimus [Labs]”, a California food safety company. PCC Natural Markets are the (Whole Foods equivalent) for Seattle, Washington. (Quote taken from PCC Natural Marketsarticle entitled “Questions about Mexican organics?” published in early 2011)
The average Del Cabo farmer makes around $30,000 per year and has a health insurance policy through the company for themselves and their family although we can’t say how or if Obamacare has affected that particular perk.
Here’s how this all links us to what’s happening today, Thursday, November 20, 2014, when the President announces his sweeping Immigration reforms via Executive Order turned “Memo” in the final hours. “By importing food from Mexican growers who receive a living wage, such as those who sell products recognized as “fair trade,” we’re empowering farmers to remain in their own communities rather than leave home seeking employment. In the United States, at every link in the agricultural chain – from farm to processor to restaurant backend – labor often comes from Mexico. The USDA reports that more than half the hired workers employed by U.S. produce growers are believed to be unauthorized immigrants.

Del Cabo offers its members economic sustenance at home.

This is a picture of the Espinoza family that has been members of Del Cabo for three generations.
The increase in certified organic acreage in Mexico also means a safer environment free of persistent, toxic chemicals for workers, families and children living nearby, as well as a roster of organic seeds relevant to their climate.” (Quote taken from PCC Natural Markets article entitled “Questions about Mexican organics?” published in early 2011)  This is more of the good news resulting from our importing USDA Organic food from Mexico. We get more organics and Mexican families thrive at home.

Meet Larry Jacobs

Larry Jocobs was born in Los Angeles County and owned and managed a tree nursery when he got very sick from using traditional pesticides. That incident was the birth of Jacobs Farm, which is now the largest organic culinary herb producer in the United States. Larry and his wife, Sandra Belin, “went on to found theDel Cabo Cooperative in Mexico, which continues to assist indigenous farmers in growing and selling their produce at a price that creates a sustainable livelihood for their families.” (Quote taken from “Deep Roots On-Line Magazine” article entitled “Farming Change Agent Larry Jacobs Shares Vision on Sustainable and Organic Ag, Part 1, dated some time in 2013)
A huge Mexican farmers organic cooperative created by an American farmer and entrepreneur. What a perfect match. Larry has also started organic farmer cooperatives in other Latin countries like South America and Peru. Here’s the upside from Larry’s perspective:

“In Baja, California we have measured that since we started in 1985, and most families that previously earn between two and three thousand dollars a year, now earn in the high twenties.

The average is $30,000 a year and some families make much more than that. So it’s a tenfold increase in their income. Young men that were working in the U.S. illegally, are returning to their family farms, because they can make just as much money working with their fathers and the rest of their families in their communities. And they could work here [at home] without ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] documentation.” (Quote taken from “Deep Roots On-Line Magazine” article entitled “Farming Change Agent Larry Jacobs Shares Vision on Sustainable and Organic Ag, Part 1, dated some time in 2013)

Our conclusion? We just eat more  Organic Food and help solve our Immigration issues!
Here’s a photo of our aquaponically grown Red and Green Oak Leaf Lettuce, which is the most organic lettuce you can get.
It doesn’t even have to be Organic Food imported from Mexico, South America or Peru because the more we eat organics, the more we’ll need; and it will automatically increase the imports from those countries. WA LA! Side Note: We understand it really isn’t that simple; but we truly believe this is a direction that could offer some relief for our broken Immigration system.

This Day is full of Synchronicity!

Why? Because I’m about to go out into this Growroom and harvest some of our Culinary Basil to package it up and take over to Sue’s Health Foods, our local Yucca Valley Health Food Store. Where’s the synchronicity you ask?
Today, I just discovered Larry Jacobs (above) who happens to be the largest culinary herb producer in the U.S. We’re thinking we could learn a thing or two from Larry.
At any rate, because we’re in a very challenging environment, we’re growing our zerO brand Culinary Basil inside an aquaponics growroom where we can control our temperature and keep everything a balmy 75 degrees just like Mexico. We’re able to grow several different kinds of Culinary Basil including Sweet Basil, which is in the large center container and the container on the right; and we’re also growing Greek Basil, which is in the container on the left. Today, we’re delivering Sweet Basil so if you live in the High Desert near Yucca Valley, head on over to Sue’s to get yours and help us give Larry a little competition.

We finally made it into the Trailer! But don’t blink or you’ll miss us.

Go check out the Trailer for this great documentary that’s still in production. We’re in it! You’ll see our Tomatoes growing inside our Greenhouse and the outside of our Greenhouse early in the Trailer. Later in the Trailer, there’s a quick shot of Grace in our Growroom that we just showed you growing Basil. Grace was thrilled when she realized she came right after one of her heroes, the GMO Activist, Jeffrey Smith.

Coming in December. The U.S. Obesity Crisis! Just in time for Christmas. Don’t miss it.

This crisis is a national disaster putting us at the top of the most obese country’s top 10 List. It’s killing thousands of us and getting worse; and it’s happening right along side the healthy food movement. What’s powering it? How can it be stopped? These are some of the issues we’ll be looking at in December.
Thank you for your loyal support of this Newsletter. We can’t believe we only have one more Newsletter to go to complete our first year of continuous Monthly Newsletters. It’s been touch and go a few times, but we’ve done it; and we couldn’t have (wouldn’t have) done it without YOU, our incredible Subscribers.THANK YOU and have a healthy, happy, organic Thanksgiving Celebration with your friends and family.

The Organic Industry in the U.S (uh, not really)          Part 2

Dear Subscriber:

Some of the things we’ll be sharing in this Part 2 of our Report on the Organic Industry will surprise you. In some ways we’ll be sharing the dark side of the USDA Certified Label. In other ways, depending on how you view it, we’ll be sharing the bright side.
You’re invited to make up your own mind.

Did you know our USDA Organic Label is Worldwide?

Many, if not most of us Americans, naively believe that our USDA Organic Label is an exclusive U.S. only Certification. We have to admit, we we’re among them; but that is not so.
“The U.S. National Organic Program (NOP) streamlined the certification process for international as well as domestic trade when it was implemented in 2002. Organic farmers and handlers anywhere in the world are permitted to export organic products to the United States if they meet NOP standards, along with other regulatory standards, and are certified by a public or private organic certification body with USDA accreditation.
“In 2007, USDA-accredited groups certified 27,000 producers and handlers worldwide to the U.S. Organic Standard, with approximately 16,000 in the United States and 11,000 in over 100 foreign countries. Farmers and handlers certified to NOP standards are most numerous in Canada, Italy, Turkey, China and Mexico, which together accounted for half the total foreign organic farmers/handlers in 2007.” (Taken from the USDA “Emerging Issues in the U.S. Organic Industry” Report dated June 2009.)
For an updated and very extensive list of Certified USDA Organic operations worldwide go Here. Clicking through the first 20 of the 2,711 pages (with 10 on a page) is an eye-opening experience of realization that USDA Organic is, indeed, a worldwide designation; and most of these operations and handlers are importing their products to the U.S.
This list was updated in 2013 and surprisingly, there are still only a few more than 27,000 Certified Organic operations. We find this both puzzling and enlightening because it means that the proportions of operations and handlers reported in 2007 remain about the same, which is to say that 41% of the holders of USDA certification are from foreign countries. EGAD!
It seems we didn’t only export our manufacturing to foreign countries, we exported our USDA Organic Standards so foreign operators could import food into our agricultural sector and land it in what we established in Part 1 as the fastest growing food market, which is expected to increase by 14% annually. It’s looking like we need to place “Made in America” labels next to our USDA Labels these days.

(All quotes in this section taken from the USDA “Emerging Issues in the U.S. Organic Industry” Report dated June 2009.)

What happens to Foreign Imported Food before it’s allowed in the U.S.?

If we really wanted to tell this story in its entirety, it would take all of next years Newsletters in a Series. Don’t worry, we’re not going there. But we are going to give you a bird’s eye view of what Foreign Imported Food has to go through to gain entry and thank goodness these regulations are in place.
“Since fruits and vegetables are particularly susceptible to phytosanitary [meaning issues that have to do with plant disease and plant pests] problems, their imports are often subject to a large number of regulatory requirements.” Having the USDA Organic label doesn’t magically get organic operator produce across the U.S. border because other agencies have to be satisfied.
“For example, fruit and vegetable imports are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) for pest risk, USDA’s Agricultural Market-ing Service regulates for quality standards and marketing claims and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates for adulteration with pesticides and human pathogens.” Then there’s the National Agricultural Release Program (NARP). It is “a special import program that mandates fewer physical inspections for shipments in pathways designated as low risk by APHIS.” Under the NARP Program, “APHIS allows agricultural inspections and treatments to occur at the country of disembarkation by creating producer-financed, pre-clearance programs.”
The interesting word here that covers an entire gamut of things that could happen to imported fruits and vegetables prior to entry is the word, “TREATMENTS”.
Treatments are actions that can be ordered by the regulating agency called APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service). APHIS can order that the shipment be Fumigated, Cold Treated, Hot Treated, Irradiated or even Destroyed. Sometimes, if the producer is under NARP, these “treatments” happen before the shipment leaves the foreign country from which it is being shipped and paperwork attesting to that fact is presented.
So what is Fumigation? “Fumigation is a method of pest control that completely fills an area with gaseous pesticides-or fumigants-to suffocate or poison the pests within. [Did we say pesticides or fumigants?] It is used to control pests in buildings (structural fumigation), soil, grain, and produce, and is also used during processing of goods to be imported or exported to prevent transfer of exotic organisms.” Does that mean that the USDA Organic avocados from Mexico have been fumigated? If a questionable pest has been identified on the plant, it appears that might have happened. Who knows? I’m not aware of ever seeing a label that says, “This fruit/vegetable was Fumigated before it entered the U.S.”
What is Cold Treatment? Cold Treatment is the storage of the fruit or plant in an approved cold storage facility with minimum degrees and numbers of days in cold storage depending on the fruit or vegetable being treated. For example, oranges from Costa Rica require 34 degrees for a minimum of 20 days before entry into the U.S. This treatment procedure is aimed at killing fruit flies. So if an imported USDA Organic crop is to undergo Cold Treatment on the U.S. side of the border, it gets to your local grocery store 20 days later than it would have without the treatment. That’s almost 3 weeks, which makes the “Locally Grown” Label we discussed in Part 1 look even better.
What is Hot Treatment?”Hot water dips or heated air can be used for direct control of postharvest insects. In mangoes, an effective treatment is 46.4 C for 65 to 90 minutes, depending on size (Sommer & Arpaia in Kader, 1992). Fruit should not be handled immediately after heat treatment. Whenever heat is used with fresh produce, cool water showers or forced cold air should be provided to help return the fruits to their optimum temperature as soon as possible after completion of the treatment.”(Taken from the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) Corporate Document Repository)

What is Irradiation? We’ve discussed Irradiation before in our April/FOOD REVOLUTION Part 1  Newsletter. But it’s so important, we need to discuss it again below:

Aren’t we all eager to eat the food that has passed through the RAD SOURCE?

“Food irradiation is the process of exposing foodstuffs to a source of energy capable of stripping electrons from individual atoms in the targeted material (ionizing radiation).”

“The radiation can be emitted by a radioactive substance or generated electrically.” (Definition from Wikipedia)

“This treatment is used to preserve food, reduce the risk of food borne illness, prevent the spread of invasive pests, delay or eliminate sprouting or ripening, increase juice yield and improve re-hydration. It is permitted by over 50 countries, with 500,000 metric tons of foodstuffs annually processed worldwide.” (Definition from Wikipedia)

“Two things are needed for the irradiation process:

  1. a source of radiant energy, and
  2. a way to confine that energy.

For food irradiation, the sources are radioisotopes (radioactive materials) and machines that produce high-energy beams. Specially constructed containers or compartments are used to confine the beams so personnel won’t be exposed.” But it’s fine to eat what went through this machine???

“Since 1986, all irradiated products must carry the international symbol called a radura, which resembles a stylized flower.”

Now that’s interesting because we’re NOT aware of having seen a Radura anywhere or perhaps we have seen them and simply regarded them as a benign new label in the sea of labels. Accompanying the radura are supposed to be these words:

“Treated with irradiation or Treated by irradiation”

“FDA requires that both the logo and statement appear on packaged foods, bulk containers of unpackaged foods, on placards at the point of purchase (for fresh produce), and on invoices for irradiated ingredients and products sold to food processors.” Really?

“Irradiation cannot be used with all foods. It causes undesirable flavor changes in dairy products, for example, and it causes tissue softening in some fruits, such as peaches and nectarines.” Yeah, peaches and nectarines are safe from irradiation! (All quotes in this section taken from a pro irradiation Food Safety Report by Iowa State Extension)

If 500,000 metric tons of irradiated food are in the market worldwide, it seems we’d all be well informed about how to avoid this particular food “treatment” menace by looking for the ubiquitous label. At least irradiated food products are supposed to be labeled unlike the non-labeled GMO’s.

We’re staging a Radura Watch on our Aquaponics USA Facebook page in November. Please join us, photograph your hits and post them on our/your page.

“A major concern is that irradiation might cause chemical changes that are harmful to the consumer. In particular the argument is that there is a lack of long-term studies, and therefore the safety of irradiated food is not scientifically proven in spite of the fact that hundreds of animal feeding studies of irradiated food, including multigenerational studies, have been performed since 1950.” (Quote taken from Wikipedia)

Animal studies aren’t human studies unless one sees us as cattle.

To see the National List for yourself, just click the words. Don’t despair. Anyone can petition to amend the National List. If you’ve found a substance that is of particular concern, just follow the step by step process below and see where it gets you.
§205.607   Amending the National List.

(a) Any person may petition the National Organic Standard Board for the purpose of having a substance evaluated by the Board for recommendation to the Secretary for inclusion on or deletion from the National List in accordance with the Act.

(b) A person petitioning for amendment of the National List should request a copy of the petition procedures from the USDA at the address in §205.607(c).

(c) A petition to amend the National List must be submitted to: Program Manager, USDA/AMS/TMP/NOP, 1400 Independence Ave., SW., Room 4008-So., Ag Stop 0268, Washington, DC 20250.

Is it any wonder, we’re saying that “Aquaganic™” fruits and vegetables have a real chance of being accepted by the “power shoppers” once they realize what the USDA Label really is and isn’t? This data was current up to September 17, 2014; but, unfortunately, because the NOSB (National Organic Standards Board) has been co-opted by Big Food, the result of which has been many substances added to this National List with more substances being added, more often, there have, most likely, been several new substances added since the current posted date of September 17th, 2014. The great fear is that GMO’s will be allowed; and that will kill the USDA Certified Organic Label completely.

What is The Dirty Dozen Plus?

In spite of all the negative press we’ve been giving USDA Organic Food, it’s still superior to pesticide laden and GMO Food. Here’s an eye opening List from the Environmental Working Group that shares some very disturbing news about some of our favorite fruits and vegetables when it comes to their pesticide residue contents.
The fruits and vegetables that retain the most pesticides are actually on a well-known List called “The Dirty Dozen”; and you’re not going to like what you see.
THE DIRTY DOZEN listed by most pesticide residues:
1. Apples
2. Strawberries
3. Grapes
4. Celery
5. Peaches
6. Spinach
7. Sweet Bell Peppers
8. Nectarines (Imported)
9. Cucumbers
10. Cherry Tomatoes
11. Snap Peas (Imported)
12. Potatoes
It is highly recommended that you buy Organic or NCO (Non-Certified Organic) when it comes to these twelve fruits and vegetables. In terms of the image above, there are only three fruits and vegetables that are further down on the List. They are carrots at #22, Oranges at #31 and Bananas at #32 out of a total of 51 placements on the List.
To get more information about the dangers of eating pesticide laden food, go to the Environmental Working Group site.

It’s not a bug, it’s Basil specific Downy Mildew!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIf you’ve got any Sweet Basil plants that look like this, you’re not dealing with a bug. You’re dealing with a new blight on basil called Downy Mildew. And, unfortunately, we’ve got it.

Downy Mildew isn’t knew in gardens; and it’s been affecting cucumbers, squash and other vegetables for years. That Downy Mildew puts a white powdery cover over the leaves of the infected plant.

This Downy Mildew is a mildew of another ilk. It doesn’t turn the Basil leaves white. It first turns them yellow, then brown and then they are dead; and, unfortunately, it’s a rather new scourge in the U.S. having shown up in Florida in 2007 for the first time. What’s its origin? Uganda, no less where it was first reported in 1933. So it looks like it took 81 years to become endemic around the world. The good news is it did take that long to become a worldwide problem.

“Basil growers may recall with frustration a similar situation years ago with another new disease: Fusarium wilt. In just a few years, as the cause of this wilt was being identified, the pathogen became endemic most likely as the result of marketing of contaminated seed. It also is possible that spread of the basil downy mildew pathogen occurred through marketing of infected, basil leaves that were asymptomatic during shipment. Basil in the US has become the leading culinary herb and is available year round.”(Quote taken from Cornell University’s Vegetable MD Online at: http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu/NewsArticles/BasilDowny.html)

And it grows like weeds in aquaponics and hydroponics systems in both horizontal raft growing troughs and vertical growing systems, so identifying Downy Mildew early is important because it can take out an entire crop.

“Basil downy mildew is caused by the pathogen Peronospora belbahrii. This pathogen thrives in warm, humid conditions. It can move into the garden in infected seed or transplants or as airborne spores.”(Quote taken from Cornell University’s Vegetable MD Online at: http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu/NewsArticles/BasilDowny.html)

“Plants infected with basil downy mildew first display yellowing of lower leaves. Upon close examination, gardeners will notice that the yellowing appears to occur in sections restricted by major veins. This causes a blocky or angular yellow sections on the leaf.

yellow leaf from downy mildew

If the lower surface of the leaf is examined, dark colored spores can be seen as a dirty looking fuzz that grows directly below the yellow sections of the leaf. A small magnifying glass may be useful in viewing these spores. As the disease progresses, infected sections of the leaf turn dark brown to black and leaves may fall off. “(Quote taken from Cornell University’s Vegetable MD Online at: http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu/NewsArticles/BasilDowny.html)

basil leaf back with downy M spores

We just tore an entire Deep Media Bed out of our Greenhouse that had both Sweet Basil and Cinnamon Basil growing in them; and both plants were infected. Sweet Basil is much more susceptible to Downy Mildew but the Spice varieties will also get it.

“The first step in preparing for basil downy mildew is learning the symptoms. Observing spores on the underside of leaves is key to diagnosis.  There are other causes of leaf yellowing in basil. Spores are produced during the dark night period, therefore early morning is the best time to inspect basil for downy mildew. Leaves with yellowing resembling downy mildew but lacking spores can be placed upside down on wet paper towel in a closed plastic bag in dark for a day to encourage the pathogen if present to produce spores.”(Quote taken from Cornell University’s Vegetable MD Online at: http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu/NewsArticles/BasilDowny.html)

“Using seed not infested with the basil downy mildew pathogen, selecting a less susceptible variety, and applying fungicides are the primary management practices for downy mildew. Minimizing leaf wetness and reducing humidity to obtain conditions unfavorable for disease development may suppress downy mildew, especially in greenhouses.” (Quote taken from Cornell University’s Vegetable MD Online at: http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu/NewsArticles/BasilDowny.html)

Our mistake (again) was getting in a hurry to put seedlings into our Grow Beds and purchasing them from the Home Depot Garden Dept. instead of planting the seeds ourselves. One other time we did this, we ended up with a massive infestation of aphids in our Greenhouse. Hopefully, this time we learned our lesson.

Farmers need to regularly inspect their crops for signs of this scourge as once it’s gotten a foothold, it’s impossible to eradicate.

Thanks for following our Blog. We still consider ourselves gardening beginners around here and are sharing what we’re learning as we go. Sorry to have to share bad news about a relatively new plant disease like Basil Downy Mildew.

Dear Subscriber:
We are writing an extensive Report on the Organic Industry in the U.S., which we will be offering free to our potential Aquaponics World Food Forever™ Farm clients and from which we are publishing excerpts in both our September and October Newsletters.
This is a very informative Report covering all aspects of the Organic Food Market in terms of it’s growth, regulations, imports and emerging issues facing the U.S. Organic Industry.
This is the 2nd Newsletter Series we’ve published, the first being a four-month Series on the FOOD REVOLUTION. If you wish to view that Series, go to our July Newsletter, which contains Links to this four-part Series that started in April.

How Do We Define Organic Food in the U.S?

The National U.S. Organic Program is overseen by a Board called the National Organic Standards Board. This Board’s integrity is coming into question these days due to the sad fact that it has been taken over by the Big Food Companies like Coca Cola who have clandestinely entered the fast growing Organic Market by buying up most of the original Mom and Pop family organic companies that appeared on the Organic scene prior to or at the turn of the century.
The FOOD REVOLUTION Series goes into this fact in depth if you wish to follow that thread.
But back to our subject. How does the U.S. define “Organic”?
“The following definition of ‘organic production’ was adopted into the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) Regulation at 7 CFR 205:

Organic production. A production system that is managed in accordance with the Act and regulations in this part to respond to site-specific conditions by integrating cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity.

‘Organic’ is a labeling term that refers to agricultural products produced in accordance with Organic Foods Production Act and the NOP Regulations. The principal guidelines for organic production are to use materials and practices that enhance the ecological balance of natural systems and that integrate the parts of the farming system into an ecological whole. Organic agriculture practices cannot ensure that products are completely free of residues; however, methods are used to minimize pollution from air, soil and water.

Organic food handlers, processors, and retailers adhere to standards that maintain the integrity of organic agricultural products. The primary goal of organic agriculture is to optimize the health and productivity of interdependent communities of soil life, plants, animals and people.” (Taken from the Organic Trade Association website athttp://www.ota.com/definition/nosb.html)

The above aquaponically grown tomatoes don’t qualify as USDA Certified Organic even though they are about as “Organic” as you can get. Why are they disqualified?
It has to do with the last line of the definition of “Organic”–
“The primary goal of organic agriculture is to optimize the health and productivity of interdependent communities of soil life, plants, animals and people.” These tomatoes are not grown in SOIL!
They’re growing in an expanded clay media. That’s actually the good news because according to an article published in The Telegraph as far back as February of 2010, “An estimated 75 billion tons of soil is lost annually with more than 80% of the world’s farming land ‘moderately or severely eroded’.” So just since that article was published, our world has LOST 300 billion tons of soil.(Taken from an article published in  The Telegraph and put On-Line at:
Food grown in Aquaponics Systems is actually the most Organic Food you can eat as long as the Aquaponic farmer isn’t using GMO seeds because there’s no need for Pesticides or Petro-Chemicals to grow the plants. The fish fertilize them naturally while acting as the canary in the coal mine. They can’t handle toxins or additives other than chelated iron and potassium now and then.
Don’t tell the USDA! They might wake up and take a 2nd look at the enormous benefits of growing food in Aquaponics Systems, never mind the fact that Aquaponically grown food uses 90% less water! More on that in Part 3.

There was a time when everyone ate Organic Food because it was the only food grown.

It wasn’t that long ago when all the food everyone ate was “Organic”. It didn’t need a certification label because everyone knew it was nutritious, natural food with no
petro-chemicals, pesticides or GMO’s. It was just plain FOOD.
Of course the post World War II agricultural revolution put an end to that when the use of chemical pesticides became the norm and the behemoth Chemical Companies came on the food production scene.
Now, for those of us who wish to return to just plain, naturally grown food, an entire industry complete with Certification has blossomed; and inspite of the fact that this new industry is being co-opted by Big Food, USDA Certified Organic Food is still far superior to GMO, pesticide and chemical laden Food.
The following statistics demonstrate just how big this purer food movement has become. It’s also important you understand that this movement has also broadened to include food labeled “Natural”, “Locally Grown” and NCO (Non-Certified Organic) right alongside food labeled “USDA Organic”.
Our goal over here at Aquponics USA/World is to bring our in-house Certification Label, “Aquaganic”, that describes food grown in Aquaponics Systems as “Beyond Organic” right into the middle of this fast-growing market.

The new O Marketplace. How big is it?

For the purposes of this discussion, we’re calling this the newO Marketplace because it includes more than just USDA Certified Organic Food. It’s a growing Market with new designators coming into it. We believe that as the USDA Certified Organic Label gets more and more compromised as the “National List”, which is a list of allowed non-organic ingredients, grows along with consumer awareness, these other designators will come to the forefront.
The “NCO” Label stands for Non-Certified Organic; and anyone who shops at Farmer’s Markets are familiar with it. Small farmers marketing their products through Farmer’s Markets are using this label instead of trying to jump through all the hoops required by the USDA to get that certification; and there are a lot of them. “According to recent (not really as this Report came out in 2009) census of agriculture results, approximately 136,000 farmers reported selling agricultural products directly to consumers, while only about 20,000 farmers reported producing [USDA] Organic products.”(Quote taken from the USDA Report entitled “Emerging Issues in the U.S. Organic Industry”)
In the last five years, we know these numbers have increased considerably; but the number of farmers using the NCO designation is still much larger than the number of farmers using the USDA Certification; and due to the “Locally Grown” movement discussed below, their numbers are growing.
The “Locally Grown” designator is finding itself on lots of labels. It’s all about where the food is grown instead of how the food is grown; and there’s a huge movement to buy locally grown food, which is often equated with “the belief that local production is environmentally responsible, even though local labels are not typically associated with production standards.” (Quote taken from the USDA Report entitled“Emerging Issues in the U.S. Organic Industry”)
Then there’s the “Natural” designator; and even though there are no regulations that cover the “Natural” label, consumers gravitate to it in hopes that “Natural” food is more healthy and nutritious than food not labeled “Natural”. In fact, in 2009, during the economic downslide in the U.S., food labeled “Natural” outsold food labeled USDA Organic.

“‘Increasingly to consumers, the term natural means organic’, said A. Elizabeth Sloan, president of Sloan Trends, Inc., Escondido, Calif. ‘Partly as a result of this confusion’, she said, ‘the appeal of organic foods is no longer growing. If you look at what’s going on right now, natural foods are outselling organic four to one,’ she said. ‘When you ask people to define natural and define organic, you get exactly the same thing. In 2009, organic equals natural. That wasn’t the case in the past.'”(Quote taken from an article in Food Business News in March of 2009 entitled “A Natural Mess”.
And finally, the “Aquaganic™”designator. Right now there are no “Aquaganic™” products on the market; but it won’t be long before there are; and it looks like they’ll be debuting right in the middle of two of the biggest metropolises in the U.S., Los Angeles and Houston. More about that in a later Newsletter.
The “Aquaganic™” Certification is the answer to the USDA’s problem with SOILLESS food production. This produce will be touted as “Beyond Organic” because there is no National List (more on that nightmare in Part 2) and there are no Big Food companies co-opting Aquaponic farming YET. It’s the purest, healthiest food on the market; and it’s coming down the track like a bullet train to a market near you soon. Watch for it.
AUSA Aquaganic Label 4x5
Now that we’ve set the stage for the new O Market let’s talk about how big it really is! Hold on to your hats.
A compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of a whopping 14% is expected for the U.S. Organic Food Market from 2013 through 2018 according to the new “United States Organic Food Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2018” Report; and it’s the Western States that are driving that growth, which is due to growing domestic production and increasing awareness. (Stats taken from the on-line website calledFood Navigator)

Meet SPINS and IRi and their
mind-blowing data about the new O Market Share
SPINS is a leading provider of retail consumer insights, analytics and consulting for the Natural, Organic and Specialty Products Industry.
IRI Market Measurement provides CPG (consumer packaged goods) and retail executives with the highest-quality and most comprehensive market tracking information and insights available via easy-to-use technology-enabled access and visualization tools.
Recently, these two companies teamed up to do a Report on the Natural/Organic Food Market; and here’s what they discovered.
The Natural/Organic Retail Sales reached $81.3 billion in 2012, which was up 13.5% from 2011 and which almost reached the 14% expected increase reported by the U.S. Organic Food Market Forecast & Opportunities Report quoted above. But there’s another important statistic to figure into these results, which boosts the potential for the Natural/Organic Food Market even more; and that is the following:
“There are two small ‘power shopper’ groups that together comprise only 18% of consumers; but they account for almost 50% of all sales of Natural/Organic products, which means that 82% of U.S. consumers haven’t reached their buying potential in the fast-growing CPG segment.” These so-called “power shoppers” have been dubbed the “true believers” and “enlightened environmentalists” and they make up 46% of all Natural/Organic product sales.
According to the USDA Economic Research Service, produce and dairy are still the top two Organic Food categories accounting for 43 and 15 percent of total organic sales in 2012, which means that produce, which accounts for almost half of all organic sales at 43% is the number one category attracting the “power shoppers”; and it is produce that Aquaponics Food Forever™ Farms grow in “Aquaganic™ “abundance.

Dear Subscriber:
This is a Revolution you’re participating in whether you know it or not. Some of us are participating in it consciously and some of us are unconscious participants. Every time you purchase a food item, you’ve helped the Revolutionaries or you’ve helped the Adversaries.
These Newsletters are about becoming more conscious. We’ve gotten more conscious just writing them. Yes, it takes time and effort to make sure you’re on the side of the Revolutionaries; but this War maybe the most important War we’ve ever engaged in on planet Earth because it’s a War for the very existence of pure, healthy, wholesome NATURAL food not food created by the Biotechs who actually think they can engineer food better than Mother Nature.
Please make a commitment to join the FOOD REVOLUTION and bring back our right to eat real food.

Who Are The Tireless Allied Forces?

These are the Organizations in the trenches. They are actively engaged in the fight. Some are broadly focused. Others are more narrowly focused; but they are all fighting for our right to eat real food. They are often grassroots organizations and sometimes one-man bands. They’re fighting with education, scientific research and community organization tactics.

Find out about them. Join their causes. Support them. They are our Warriors in the fight backing up the Revolutionaries on the Food Battlefield, which is the entire planet Earth.

We’ve only listed 7 of these Organizations; but there are many more. Do your homework. Find the others and join them. This is how YOU can get involved.

Organic Consumers Association is an online and grassroots non-profit 501(c)3 public interest organization campaigning for health, justice, and sustainability. The OCA deals with crucial issues of food safety, industrial agriculture, genetic engineering, children’s health, corporate accountability, Fair Trade, environmental sustainability and other key topics. They are one of the only organizations in the US focused exclusively on promoting the views and interests of the nation’s estimated 50 million organic and socially responsible consumers.
This organization works in several arena’s including the movement demanding labeling of GMO’s. It was formed in 1998 in the wake of the mass backlash by organic consumers against the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s controversial proposed national regulations for organic food. (More on that later).
The OCA represents over 850,000 members, subscribers and volunteers, including several thousand businesses in the natural foods and organic marketplace.
(Taken from their “About” Page)

“Food Democracy Now! is a grassroots community dedicated to building a sustainable food system that protects our natural environment, sustains farmers and nourishes families.

“Our food system is fundamentally broken. A few companies dominate the market, prioritizing profits over people and our planet. Government policies put the interests of corporate agribusiness over the livelihoods of farm families. Farm workers toil in unsafe conditions for minimal wages. School children lack access to healthy foods–as do millions of Americans living in poverty. From rising childhood and adult obesity to issues of food safety, air and water pollution, worker’s rights and global warming, our current food system is leading our nation to an unsustainable future.”

Food Democracy Now, lead by Dave Murphy and Lisa Stokke is an over “650,000 strong organization of American Farmers and citizens dedicated to reforming policies relating to food, agriculture and the environment. Murphy has been called ‘the most crucial and politically savvy actor in the on-going efforts to help move American agriculture into the 21st century’ as a result of his ‘Sustainable Dozen’ campaign, which resulted in four candidates being placed in high level positions at the USDA and his efforts to reform food and agriculture under the Obama administration.”

#3. IRT

Their “About” Page says the following: The Institute for Responsible Technology is a world leader in educating policy makers and the public about genetically modified (GM) foods and crops. They investigate and report their risks and impact on health, environment, the economy, and agriculture, as well as the problems associated with current research, regulation, corporate practices, and reporting.

Founded in 2003 by international bestselling author and GMO expert Jeffrey Smith, IRT has worked in nearly 40 countries on 6 continents, and is credited with improving government policies and influencing consumer-buying habits.

IRT’s work comes from a dedicated team of subject experts, consultants and staff who generously donate their time and experience. In addition, IRT employs media experts, social network campaigners, writers, graphic designers, communications specialists, fundraisers, outreach professionals and support staff, who operate both at our headquarters in Iowa, and from virtual offices in the US.

IRT’s Campaign for Healthier Eating in America mobilizes citizens, organizations, businesses, healthcare professionals, and the media, to achieve the tipping point of consumer rejection of GM foods.

Danielle Nierenberg is the President of Food Tank, a Food Think Tank focused on building a global community for safe, healthy, nourished eaters. They spotlight environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable ways of alleviating hunger, obesity, and poverty and create networks of people, organizations, and content to push for food system change.

Food Tank is for the 7 billion people who have to eat every day. They offer solutions and environmentally sustainable ways of alleviating hunger, obesity, and poverty by creating a network of connections and information for all of us to consume and share. Food Tank is for farmers and producers, policy makers and government leaders, researchers and scientists, academics and journalists, and the funding and donor communities to collaborate on providing sustainable solutions for our most pressing environmental and social problems.

Food Tank highlights hope and success in agriculture. They feature innovative ideas that are already working on the ground, in cities, in kitchens, in fields and in laboratories. These innovations need more attention, more research, and ultimately more funding to be replicated and scaled-up. And that is where they need you. We all need to work together to find solutions that nourish ourselves and protect the planet.

Natural News covers holistic health, nutritional therapies, consciousness and spirituality, permaculture, organics, animal rights, environmental health, food and superfoods, and performance nutrition.

The site strongly criticizes drugs-and-surgery medicine, vaccines, corporate corruption, animal testing, the use of humans for medical experiments, the chemical contamination of foods, heavy metals in consumer products, factory farming and government corruption.

Natural News also warns its readers about science gone bad and frequently cites examples of science resulting in catastrophies that it calls “crimes” against humanity. Examples of such subjects cited by Natural News include:

  • Agent Orange
  • Thalidomide
  • Nuclear weapons
  • GMOs and “genetic pollution”
  • Aspartame and chemical sweeteners
  • Chemotherapy
  • The presence of hidden cancer viruses in polio vaccines
  • The continued use of mercury in vaccines and dental amalgams
  • The long history of pharmaceutical experiments on human beings, including the Tuskegee syphilis experiments conducted on African Americans in the USA.

We Had To Add Him To Our REVOLUTIONARIES LIST!
To see the others on that List, click on our May Newsletter above.

Meet one of our Heros, Michael J. Potter, owner of Eden Foods; and he couldn’t have a better suited last name because he’s the good guy fighting some real dark forces in this battle for Real Food.
He isn’t in the trenches. He goes right into the middle of the NOSB Boardroom, which is the National Organic Standards Board where what is determined to be USDA Organic and what is not is decided.
Sadly, what most of us don’t know is that the NOSB has been co-opted by the Big Food Companies like Coca Cola, Kellogg, Cargill Chemical and General Mills as these companies have bought up most of the nation’s once family owned organic food companies, kept their labels and now parade them out into the marketplace as the original thing. If you want to know more about this deception, go to our June Food Revolution Newsletter above.
Because BIG FOOD has become BIG ORGANIC, they populate the NOSB and make the decisions about what new additives can be labeled Organic. So in late May of 2012, Mr. Potter went to the NOSB Meeting where some important decisions about additives were taking place; and he voiced his objection to adding “Carrageenan” to what is called the “National List”. This infamous List is the list of all the non-organic ingredients that have been allowed in foods that are labeled USDA Organic; and as these Big Food companies started stacking the Board, the list of nonorganic materials approved for organic foods increased from 77 items in 2002 to 250 nonorganic substances in 2012. Take a look at this ungodly “National List” for yourself and don’t blink because it’s growing right before our eyes.
After Mr. Potter, our Hero, voiced his concern that Carrageenan has been linked to malignancies and other stomach problems, using research conducted by Dr. Tobacman, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, he was thanked for his input; and the NOSB Board then voted to keep Carrageenan on the National List. Here’s what Mr. Potter had to say about that:

“‘The board is stacked,’ Mr. Potter says. ‘Either they don’t have a clue, or their interest in making money is more important than their interest in maintaining the integrity of organics.’

Which either/or do you think it is?

“He calls the certified-organic label a fraud and refuses to put it on Eden’s products.” Quote taken from article in The New York Times, July 7, 2012 entitled “Has ‘Organic’ Been Oversized?

Over here at Aquaponics World we’ve also turned our backs on the co-opted USDA Organic Certification Label and created our own Certification. We call it “Aquaganic”. You can read all about it on our Aquaponics World website, Aquaganic Page.
Sorry to have popped any idealistic bubbles around heads that thought USDA Organic Certification meant the food you’re buying has no unhealthy additives. If you want to make sure you’re getting real food, buy Mr. Potter’s Eden Foods. They don’t carry that misleading label.

Another REVOLUTIONARY,
Aaron Woolf

Aaron Woolf is the producer/director of the hit documentary, King Corn.

Other work has appeared on the Sundance and Discovery Channels and on numerous networks abroad including France’s ARTE, Italy’s RAI and Australia’s SBS. His films have won Rockie, Logie, and Peabody Awards.

Woolf graduated from Middlebury College and earned a masters in film at the University of Iowa.  In the mid-1990s, Woolf turned to non-fiction storytelling, and trained his lens on individual stories that he felt touched on global trends.

Woolf’s film, King Corn, followed Ian Cheney and his best friend, Curt Ellis, on a yearlong odyssey to understand where their food comes from… by growing it. In what The Washington Post calls “Required viewing for anyone planning to visit a supermarket, fast-food joint, or their own refrigerator,” the city-slickers learn to drive a combine, cash in on government subsidies, and homebrew high-fructose corn syrup. The film’s Peabody-winning findings, shared with theatergoers in 60 cities and in a PBS national broadcast, change the way audiences eat.

Watch the Trailer. It’s a Real Eye Opener. And remember about 85% of the Corn grown in the US is Genetically Modified. EGAD!

Our last REVOLUTIONARY,
Anthony Gucciardi, founder of
Natural Society

Anthony Gucciardi became a natural health advocate after coming down with late-stage Lyme Disease and having traditional remedies that included the injections of powerful steroids lead to a rapid deterioration of his health.
Anthony created his own lifestyle regimen and overcame not only the Lyme Disease but the physical challenges left from the prolonged use of steroidal drugs. After a short period of enhanced nutrition and the alteration of other lifestyle factors, Anthony had alleviated himself of virtually all pain and symptoms from which he had been suffering. It was at this point he crafted the concept that, even beyond health, it’s always essential to seek information for yourself and produce your own research.

To help people follow this advice, he along with his partner, Mike Barrett, created Natural Society, which is now the third or fourth (depending on which stats you examine) largest natural health website in the world with millions of viewers per month. Many of their posts are food focused.

More Bad News About The Biggest Adversary To Real Food On The Planet, MONSANTO!

Josh Sager published an incisive article one month before the November 2012 US Presidential Elections that carefully documents how Monsanto has cornered and co-opted the US political system. The title of the article was “Monsanto Controls both the White House and the US Congress”.
Read it and weep. Or read our quoted synopsis below and then weep.
In essence, the article points out that no matter who is elected, Monsanto will be worshipped and Americans will continue to be the Guinea Pigs for these mad Biotechs. Case in point, “throughout his first term, President Obama has presided over the passage of several Monsanto-friendly legislative initiatives and has appointed numerous people associated with Monsanto to high-level positions.”
“By giving several billion dollars to agro-businesses, one of which is Monsanto, the ‘Southern Africa FY 2010 Implementation Plan’ promoted the expansion of these businesses into the provision of food for Africa. This expansion is aimed at increasing food supplies in Africa, but it will have the unintended consequence of promoting Monsanto’s takeover of the African food markets. Put plainly, Monsanto will crowd local African farmers out of the market and will make a profit that would be more beneficial in the hands of local African farmers and in the local African economy.
“On the issue of GMO labeling, Obama is rhetorically supportive of mandating GMO products to be labeled, but his administration has been largely silent on the issue. During the creation of the 2012 Farm Bill, there was a fight over mandating that genetically modified foods be labeled. Despite Obama’s supposed support for such labeling, his administration was essentially silent on the issue during this fight and, as a result, no mandate was passed; and 2014 brings more corruption and collusion between the Senate, the President and Monsanto. (See next Article).
“In totality, legislation passed under the Obama administration has been beneficial to large agro-businesses, one of which is Monsanto. Very little has been done to increase regulation on GMO producers and several laws have been passed that directly benefit such corporations.
“Due to the vested interest that Monsanto has in controlling regulation that affects its business, it has both donated to politicians and promoted the appointment of people who work for them to positions within the American government. As of yet, Monsanto has been successful in keeping its regulatory burdens low and getting its representatives into positions within the US government. The infiltration of regulatory agencies by corporate actors that is referred to here is called the “regulatory revolving door”. Individuals who work for industry go to work for the government, make public regulations, and then return to the private sector after leaving the public service.

“While there are numerous points of overlap between Monsanto and the United States Government under the Obama administration, the three most important connections are that of Michael Taylor, Roger Beachy, and Islam Siddiqui. All three of these Monsanto affiliates were appointed to high level positions within the government by the Obama administration.

“During his first term, President Obama appointed two Justices, one of whom was Elena Kagan, the former
Solicitor General of the United States. During her time as the Solicitor General, Kagan filed a brief in support of Monsanto.”
Unfortunately, things would NOT have been different if Romney had won the 2012 election. “In 1977, Bain Capital-the company that Romney ran, and in which he made most of his money-was starting out as a corporate consulting firm; Monsanto was among the first major clients of Bain. The multi-million dollar relationship between Bain Capital and Monsanto lasted from 1977 to 1985 and had significant effects on both corporations. Bain Capital, and its officers, made large amounts of money through its relationship with Monsanto and gained a significant client with which to base its consulting practice upon. Monsanto was given business advice by Bain and the corporation’s recent successes in GMO produce are traceable back to the suggestions that Romney made to Monsanto administrators.” (This is one long quote taken from the above designated article by Josh Sager and reprinted in the Global Research website, on May 24, 2014)
It’s obvious our Government is NOT going to aide us in this FOOD REVOLUTION. In fact, our Government is on the side of the Genetic Engineers and against the people.

If you thought the news above was bad, wait until you hear about what almost happened called The MONSANTO
PROTECTION ACT. Actually, it did happen; but only for a brief moment in time.

Also from the Global Research News website, May 25, 2013 (we’re beginning to like Global Research News) an article entitled “Monsanto Protection Act Signed By Obama, GMO Bill ‘Written By Monsanto’ Signed Into Law“. It’s another Read it and weep moment that makes it clear our Government has got Monsanto covered while Monsanto makes sure the people of America are Covered.
Here’s the essence of what the Monsanto Protection Act tried to do but failed when Senators, Barbara Mikulski and Jeff Merkley successfully led a charge to get it off the books in September of 2013 only a few months after it passed.
But for a few short months this is what Congress passed (some unknowingly because it was hidden in the Spending Bill, HR 933) and this is what the President signed.

“The Monsanto Protection Act, essentially both written by and benefiting Monsanto Corporation, was signed into law by United States President Barack Obama. The infamous Monsanto Corporation would have benefited greatly and directly from the bill, as it essentially gives companies that deal with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and genetically engineered (GE) seeds immunity to the federal courts, among other things.

“The bill stated that even if future research shows that GMOs or GE seeds cause significant health problems, cancer, etc, anything, that the federal courts no longer have any power to stop their spread, use, or sales.”

Are YOU KIDDING ME!

“The bill was apparently written by freshman Sen. Roy Blunt, in collusion with Monsanto, with them helping to craft the exact language of the document.” Sen. Roy Blunt, of  Missouri where Monsanto is headquartered, again a last name that fits the deed because this Bill was killing our Constitutional rights to justice with a Blunt Instrument, is a Republican. And, of course, “The Center for Responsive Politics notes that Sen. Blunt received $64,250 from non other than Monsanto to go towards his campaign committee between 2008 and 2012. The Money Monocle website adds that Blunt has been the largest Republican Party recipient of Monsanto funding as of late.”

Kudos to Senators Mikulski and Merkley who along with hundreds of thousands of Petitions and Marches with thousands of participants from the Real Food Allied Organizations like the ones listed above, were able to kill the Monsanto Protection Act. The FOOD REVOLUTIONARIES won that battle; but the War wages on.
However, there’s more good news because now we know exactly what Monsanto wants. They want immunity. Isn’t that interesting. If they really believe their Franken Food is good for us, why would they need immunity?

So Where Does Aquaponics Fit Into The FOOD REVOLUTION?

This is a picture of what’s growing in our Aquaponics USA/AquaponicsWorld Food Forever™ Farm Greenhouse right now. Actually, all the green sucker leaves at the top have been trimmed off since this picture was taken. That’s one of the secrets of growing tomatoes. You have to keep them trimmed.
Not one petro-chemical, not one pesticide and not one trace of Genetically Modified Organisms are involved in growing these tomatoes or any of the leafy greens in our Vertical Duffy Duct Systems that take up most of this Greenhouse.
There’s talk about the iPhone that goes something like this: Steve Jobs brought an item into the marketplace that no one knew they wanted until it arrived.
Aquaponics food growing technology is kind of like that. Millions of people still don’t know it exists and have never heard the word, “Aquaponics” before. But as soon as they are introduced to it, they want it. They want it because Aquaponics is capable of producing the most wholesome, healthy, natural food on the market today without using harsh petro-chemicals, pesticides and GMO technology.  And it’s about to take the marketplace by storm. It’s a key player in the FOOD REVOLUTION.
If we can eat locally grown food that is fertilized naturally from the dissolved solids of living fish, why would we want to eat food that’s been irradiated, or sprayed with pesticides and petro-chemicals and labeled USDA Organic while it’s full of additives from the infamous “National List” that has been co-opted by the Big Food Companies?
The truth is WE WOULDN’T. And WE WON’T. Aquaponically grown food is a NEW CHOICE, A BETTER CHOICE and once we educate the public about that new choice and get enough Aquaponic Products out there, the FOOD REVOLUTION will be won by the good guys because there is no contest. Aquaponics is our ace in the hole. It’s the antithesis to GMO’s; and it won’t be long before it kicks Monsanto and friends right out of the marketplace.
Help us win this FOOD REVOLUTION. Spread the word about Aquaponics, purchase Aquaponic Products whenever you can, request them at your favorite Food Store. The future is ours. WE’VE GOT THIS!
Thank You from the bottom of our hearts for following our Newsletters and our Blog. We’re guessing by now you get that we’re on a mission.
This 4-Part Series on the FOOD REVOLUTION has gone way beyond our original concept. This Final Newsletter contains All 4 Parts if you missed one as they all work together to make a complete story. Just go back to the top or click on our Quick Links Section.
Now, we’re going back to working like crazy to get our Aquaponically grown Products into the marketplace; and you’ll be the first to know when they arrive. Ironically, it’s looking like Missouri will be that place; and it’s ironic because that’s right where Monsanto is Headquartered. Life works in strange ways. We’ll tell you more about that project in the August Newsletter and Blog Post.
Sustainably,

Dear Subscriber:
We are at war–it’s a FOOD REVOLUTION.
In some ways it’s a war just like any other war because it’s all about territory. The side that gets the most territory wins because food is raised and grown on our land.
But we don’t actually fight this battle with high tech weapons and rifles. We fight this war with our pocket books, our credit cards and our food stamp vouchers; and in that way WE, THE CONSUMER, can and are choosing the winner of this war.
Every time we purchase a food item, we are fighting on one side of this war or the other. That’s why it’s important to know who are our Allies and who are our Adversaries because the battle lines have been blurred and are often not existent at all.

In truth, the Battleground is our entire world.

And the two main factions of the battle are the Genetic Engineers with their Big Food Allies versus the Naturalists with their small Family Farm Allies. So who are these two factions and what are the beliefs which fuel the fight.

Genetic Engineers: Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification, is the direct manipulation of an organism’s genome using biotechnology. New DNA may be inserted in the host genome by first isolating and copying the genetic material of interest using molecular cloning methods to generate a DNA sequence, or by synthesizing the DNA, and then inserting this construct into the host organism.

An organism that is generated through genetic engineering is considered to be a genetically modified organism (GMO). How we got here is a long story. If you really want to know, read William Engdahl’s Book, Seeds of Destruction.

Most of us “commoners” have no clue what these Genetic Engineers who are messing with our food are up to; but all we really need to know and understand is they are changing the DNA of many species.

Did you know that “All species, from simple bacteria to human beings, use the same genetic code? It consists of four chemical units in DNA, sometimes called nucleotides or bases, that are usually represented by the letters A, C, G and T.” Recently, one group of researchers just added two more letters to the code because they believe that “if you have a language that has a certain number of letters, you want to add letters so you can write more words and tell more stories”. They’re talking about our DNA with this callous, arrogant analogy.

These scientists actually believe they can play God with our universal DNA without consequences; and the GE food engineers believe non labeled GMO Food should be fed to the people of the world without giving us a choice. (Quotes taken from New York Times Article, May 7, 2014 by Andrew Pollack, “Scientists Add Letters to DNA’s Alphabet, Raising Hope and Fear”)

Naturalists: The Naturalists encompass overlapping groups that include the Organic Food, Raw Food, Local Food, Vegetarian, Aquaponic and Hydroponic food proponents along with various Animal Advocacy groups. For the most part, the Naturalists believe that food should be free of petro-chemicals, pesticides and, most certainly GMO’s; and that the food animals should be raised in humane environments and sacrificed in humane ways. Naturalists believe food should be as close to what mother nature intended as possible whether it be fruits, vegetables, dairy or meat.

In the U.S., the term “Natural” on labels is not regulated and, therefore, is vague and rather meaningless. But the term “Organic” has an established legal definition in many countries, including the U.S. Aquaponic and Hydroponic food is hitting the food market in ever increasing numbers and is presently self identifying with a variety of individualized labels.

If you think we ought to be messing with the DNA, you’re on the side of the GE’s in this battle. If you believe that DNA is something that should not be messed with by man and is beyond our full ability to understand or comprehend, you’re on the side of the Naturalists. It’s good to know which side of the battle you’re on.

Factory Farms have devastated the Family Farm

Not that long ago chickens were raised on family farms and allowed to roam freely around the farmyard. In the last 70 years, small family chicken farms, have been devastated and chicken farming has been taken over by five multinational giants we are citing as Adversaries in the Food Revolution.
The five chicken meat producing companies include: Tyson, Gold Kist, Pilgrim’s Pride, ConAgra Poultry and Perdue Farms. “They produce chicken meat under ‘atrocious health and safety conditions.’ According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), these plants had ‘one of the highest rates of injury and illness of any industry’ ” (Quote taken from article by Stephen Lendman, Jan. 19, 2008 “Unleashing GMO Seeds: “Food is Power”)

Because poultry is the world’s most important source of meat protein, we can be sure the Genetic Engineers are already working on producing a GMO bird. Presently, they’re introducing a GMO Salmon as their first test of the market for a GMO food animal.

Cows, both dairy and meat cattle and pigs have also been taken over by large multi-Nationals among which Cargill, Sysco, JBS and Smithfieldare dominant. In the U.S. these animals have been fed GMO feed “since these crops were first introduced in 1996 and each of the top 6 GMO crops (soy, cotton, corn, canola, sugar beet, and alfalfa) are heavily utilized by the US and global animal feed market”. (Quote taken from article by Ryan Beville, July 16, 2013 and published on the GMOInside.org website “How Pervasive are GMOs in Animal Feed?”)

So even if you’re being careful not to purchase GMO foods, if you’re a meat eater, you’re getting a secondary dose of  GMO’s via the animal meats you’re ingesting. It’s kind of like breathing secondary smoke from smokers.

And if you’re a milk drinker, there’s the whole awful subject of rBGH, which stands for recombinant bovine growth hormone, which causes dairy cows to produce 100 pounds of milk per cow per day, which is 10 times as much milk as a calf would need. This unnatural “milk production causes cows bones to become severely deficient in calcium. They become prone to fracture, and the result is a sharp increase in the number of downed cows, a general term for farm and food animals who collapse, unable to stand up again, and must be destroyed.”

How did the idyllic family farm turn into a cruel, grotesque, bloated caricature of its former self? Farming got taken over by mega corporations. A corporation is incapable of feeling love or respect for the food animals they’re raising. These animals represent income and stock market indexes. They are simply figures on a balance sheet. There is no heart in the Factory Farms. One of the best documentaries out that describes this travesty is called “Food INC.”(Quote taken from article published on Britannica Advocacy for Animals website, June 11, 2007, linked below)

Here are two Links to the Allies on the Naturalists’ side of the fray that appeared in this segment:

Who’s Putting GMO’s on our Plates without our knowledge and wants to continue doing so?

These are the Adversaries; and many of them are playing on both sides of the battlefield.

This section may surprise many of you because here is where the blurred lines get clearer; and you’ll see who the Adversaries really are.

The up side of the losses of the ballot measures to label GMO’s in both California and Washington is that the Adversaries had to show themselves in order to cause these defeats. They had to come out of the trenches and stand in full view of the public they’ve been duping for over a decade. This unveiling came in the form of contributions to defeat the ballot measures. These companies were so determined to cause these defeats, that they were willing to reveal themselves to do so after a Washington state Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, filed a lawsuit that forced the issue, of course. So who are they?

 cal-access.sos.ca.gov

Here are some of the big players: Read further at your own risk. You most likely will find some of the producers of your favorite products here. These companies were hiding behind the Grocery Manufacturers Association until they were forced to step into the light of day.

Pepsico (owners of Pepsi Cola)
Coca-Cola
Nestle
General Mills
ConAgra (you saw this name with the Meat Producers)
Campbell’s Soup Company
Kellogg Company
Land O’Lakes
Ocean Spray Cranberries
Cargill (you saw this name with the Meat Producers)
Dean Foods
Heinz
The Hershey Company

Then there’s the Genetic Engineering and AgriChemical Companies which include:

Monsanto
BayerCropScience (this is enough to cause headaches)
Dupont

But the truth gets even more painful, when you realize that many of your favorite organic and natural products, like Kashi, quite literally “sold out” to mega corporations.

 Here’s that painful list:

Yes, Coca-Cola owns odwalla, vitamin water, Zico Coconut Water, Honest Tea and Simply Orange!

Coco-Cola spent $1.5 million to defeat the GMO labeling bill in Washington.n to

Naked is owned by Pepsithe company that contributed $2.4 million to defeat the GMO labeling bill in Washington.

Gardenburger, Kashi and Fit are owned by Kellogg. We’re not sure how much Kellogg contributed to kill the labeling bills in California and Washington; but it was a monetary contributor.

Arrowhead Mills is owned by Hain-Celestial, which is partially owned by Heinz. In fact, between the time the Agriculture Department came up with its proposed regulations for organic food in 1997 and the time those rules were made law in 2002, hundreds of small, independent organic companies were purchased by the corporate giants.Heinz and it’s affiliate, Hain, bought 19 organic brands alone.

“In 1995 there were 81 independent organic processing companies in the U.S. A decade later, Big Food had gobbled up all but 15 of them.” (Quote taken from article written by the Cornucopia Institute, “Who Owns Organic”)

“Now Big Food has assumed a powerful role in setting the standards for organic foods; and these major corporations are dominating the Board that sets these standards. If they want to use carrageenan, they’ll use carrageenan. As these Big Food companies started stacking the Board, the list of nonorganic materials approved for organic foods increased. It’s called the National List and it has grown from 77 items in 2002 to 250 nonorganic substances in 2012.” More about this sad development in the July Newsletter. (Quote taken from our Aquaponics World website’s Aquaganic page)

General Mills owns Cascadian Farm, Muir Glen and LaraBar. General Mills spent $869,000 to defeat the GMO labeling bill in Washington.

Horizon is owned by Dean Foods. We’re not sure how much Dead Foods contributed to kill the labeling bills in California and Washington; but they are part of the gang of GMO lovers.

Dean Foods also owns Silk, which they acquired when they bought White Wave in 2002. Then they changed the word “Organic” on the label to “Natural” but left the packaging the same. Thousands of unaware shoppers are buying “Silk” thinking it’s still organic.

What the Big Food Corporations Don’t Want YOU to Know!
Just click on the words, “Big Food Corps” to see this graph up close and uncomfortable.
These Big Food Corporations hide in the background of their organic company acquisitions because they don’t want us consumers to know what’s actually going on. They don’t want us to realize that our food system has been hijacked by less than 35 mega corporations.

So, which family owned organic food companies didn’t sell out to the mega giants?

Here’s that List: It’s short and sweet–too short; and we’ve most likely missed a few.

What the Genetic Engineering and AgraChemical Companies  Don’t Want YOU To Know!
Just Click above on the words, “Genetic Engineering and AgraChemical Companies” to see this graph.

The Independent Seed Industry is in even worse shape compared to the Independent Food Producers because, as you can see by this graph, there are only 8 Multi-National Companies in ownership of most of the seed companies; and 5 of them are on The Big Six List of mega giant Genetic Engineering Companies.

Here’s that List:

Monsanto has the largest market share of GE crops in the world.
Syngenta makes most of its money on pesticides but is working to
to introduce new GE crops, like rice for Japan.
Dow Agrosciences is a subsidiary of Dow Chemical Company.
Bayer Cropscience is a subsidiary of Bayer.
Pioneer Hi-Bred International is a subsidiary of DuPont.

So what do you think is happening to our seeds under the control of these companies? We’re talking about seeds that have taken thousands of years to adapt to specific climatic conditions in various parts of the world.

“Many of today’s modern garden crops and fruit were first grown six thousand to seven thousand years ago by the Incas of Peru, the Maya of Central America and the Aztecs of Mexico. These cultures were the first to grow more than 150 species of plants such as corn, beans, certain varieties of squash, peanuts, peppers and tomatoes.”
(Quote taken from Native American Gardening by Michael J. Caduto and Joseph Bruchac, Fulcrum Publishing, 1996).

The history of corn is a fascinating one as it took thousands of years of careful cultivation to transform maize from a wild grass called Teosinte that originally grew in Central America 7,000 years ago into the staple food we recognize as corn today.

It took the Genetic Engineers less than 25 years to turn 85% of the U.S. corn crop into GMO corn. Obviously, it takes a lot less time to destroy our natural food resources than it does to cultivate them.

So Which Seed Companies Didn’t Sell Out To The Mega Giants?

Here’s that List: It, too, is short–real short.

Introducing Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, also located in Petaluma, California, and their line up of available books, magazines and free Good Seeds catalog. Baker Creek caries one of the largest selections of seeds from the 19th century, including many Asian and European varieties. The company has become a tool to promote and preserve our agricultural and culinary heritage. All of their seeds are non-hybrid, non-GMO, non-treated and non-patented.
_________________________________________________________

Introducing Humble Seed, founded in 2009 by Jim and Kristen Mitchell, a husband and wife team devoted to top-quality garden seeds, the betterment of the environment and the well-being of people.

Humble Seed’s premium herb, fruit and vegetable seeds are packaged in re-sealable Mylar® bags. Then they are themed and bundled in FDA food-safe containers like the ones you see above. Their convenient garden seed kits inspire gardeners to venture beyond the produce section by growing their own varieties of fresh foods.

Humble Seed is packed with care by their friends at the Marc Center. Marc Center provides opportunities for people with disabilities to be actively involved in determining where and how they live, learn, work and play.

You can purchase Humble Seed direct or buy it on our Aquaponics USA website by clicking here.

And yet another company in the Petaluma, California area. It seems Petaluma is a hot spot for Naturalists. Introducing  The Natural Gardening Company

For 26 years, they’ve specialized in certified organic seedlings, organic vegetable, herb and flower seeds, drip irrigation, natural pest controls and fertilizers, and tools. Their catalog is a work of art.

________________________________________________________

The family that owns this company is the real deal and has been passing heirloom seeds back and forth since the 1830’s.

The President is the famous Bill Heid who has been putting out the SURVIVAL SEED VAULT since the crash of 2008 and purporting the necessity of preparedness and food independence. His company,Heirloom Solutions is an off shoot of his popular Seed Vault offering many more varieties of heirloom seeds.
_________________________________________________________

This company got the premiere name, HEIRLOOM SEEDS and then attached a .com to it so they are often at the top of the Google search list. It doesn’t appear that they have a fancy catalog and their website is quite basic. Located in South Western Pennsylvania, they are a small, family run seed house that has been in the mail order business since 1988. When they started this business, their first priority was to offer old fashioned vegetables noted for their taste.  All of the varieties they offer are open pollinated (non hybrid) and have been grown by generations of backyard gardeners.
________________________________________________________

Irish Eyes Garden Seeds has been going through some changes in the last couple of years. They recently absorbed Garden City Seeds and are a family company that is also related to Ronniger’s Potato Seed Company. They specialize in organic heirloom variety seeds, as well as organic pest control and garden supplies. They also do their own trials for taste & hardiness in cold climates. The catalog has very specific (and helpful) growing instructions, including companion crop listings and pest control hints.

Dr. Phil Howard, an expert on our broken Food System
Meet Dr. Phil Howard; and if we had anything to say about it, this man would be as famous as the other Dr. Phil.

Dr. Phil Howard, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State. He is responsible for the creation and updating of the Organic Food Producers Chart and the Seed Industry Structure Chart. These Charts were featured in this Newsletter above. He teaches in the University’s Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies program.

Here’s some advice from Dr. Phil Howard:

“Consumers who want food companies that embody more of the original organic ideals would do well to seek out products from independent organic firms,” Howard advises. “Given the very uneven playing field they are competing in, independent organic processors are unlikely to survive without such support.”

Howard has created additional infographics and network animations on the wine, beer, soft drink and coffee industries, as well as on foodborne illnesses and the structure of the food system.

Like we stated in our introduction, this is a REVOLUTION we will win or lose with our wallets.

Dear Subscriber:

The Food Revolution is a multi-faceted insurgency rebelling against the industrialization of  the World’s food production over the last 70 years. Those who are proponents of the Food Revolution are determined to reaffirm our right to eat healthy, nutritious, locally grown food that is not laden with chemicals, pesticides and GMO’s.

Some of our mottos like: “Taking Our Food Back” in which the word “Taking” is an acronym for “The Assured Knowing It’s Naturally Grown”, “NO to GMO’s” in which the GMO’s stands for Genetically Modified Organisms, “Real Food” and “Right to Know” are slowly seeping into the mainstream consciousness.

It’s becoming widely known that food and health are intricately interconnected in spite of the embarrassing fact that in the 21st Century, doctors in the U.S. still get less than 25 hours of nutritional training as a prerequisite for receiving their licenses to diagnose and treat diseases in the human body. It’s also becoming widely known that Americans are the most unhealthy people on the planet. A recent study at the National Academy of Sciences found we die sooner than people in 16 other developed countries due to drug abuse, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and lung disease to name just a few of the causes of our early demise.

The U.S. Population has been designated as one of the Guinea Pigs for the BioTechs! Several nations have declined the offer.

These sad statistics are understandable once you realize the U.S. was the flash point for the industrialization of food, which  started on a grand scale after World War II. We were also one of the first populations to unknowingly ingest genetically modified organisms, which were brought into our food supply in the mid 1990’s without us having one word to say about whether or not we wanted to serve as the guinea pig for the grand GMO experiment.
GMO’s have been in our food for nearly 20 years, and we’re still fighting for the right to know which foods contain them so we can choose whether or not we want to eat them and remain on the biotech’s experimental treadmill.

Let Them Eat Any Damn Thing We Choose to Put in Their Food and Keep it a Secret! Because we’ve been given a pass by our U.S. Food Safety Czar, Michael Taylor, a former VP of Monsanto. That must mean Monsanto runs the FDA!

It’s our prediction that by 2020, given the success of the Food Revolutionaries, we’ll look back at the practice of medicine, the mass production of food, the use of GMO’s and the collusion between our enforcement agencies like the FDA and big corporations like Monsanto as the Dark Ages with Monsanto standing in for Marie Antoinette and her infamous line: “Let them eat Cake”.
In Monsanto’s case it’s “Let them eat Agent Orange”, OOPS, I mean “Glyphosate”, which is one of the toxic ingredients in Monsanto’s weed killer, Round Up.

“. . .one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty [to Choose what’s in our food] and justice for all.”

                         CHOOSE REAL FOOD!
The People of Vermont Did IT!
                          We Can All Do IT!

The Food Revolution has arisen for the same reasons every revolution arises–to bring drastic CHANGE. The word “Revolution” is from the Latin word, “Revolutio”, which mean “a turn around”. Revolutions trigger “a fundamental change in power or organizational structures that take place in a relatively short period of time.” (Wikipedia)
In the case of the Food Revolution, it’s about putting food production back in the hands of the people and taking it away from the mega corporations that have turned food into processed poisons that bolster their bottom lines.
The Food Revolutionaries are just plain sick and tired of being sick and tired; and they aren’t going to take it anymore.
We’re giving you a list of the Revolutionaries below; but you’ll need to do your homework to learn more about who they are and what they’re doing.

The Revolutionaries include:
#1 Mr. Jeffrey Smith

Meet Jeffrey Smith, a tireless Activist and “the leading consumer advocate promoting healthier non-GMO choices, Jeffrey Smith’s meticulous research documents how biotech companies continue to mislead legislators and safety officials to put the health of society at risk and the environment in peril. His work expertly summarizes why the safety assessments conducted by the FDA and regulators worldwide teeter on a foundation of outdated science and false assumptions, and why genetically engineered foods must urgently become our nation’s top food safety priority.” (From About Jeffrey)

Don’t miss Jeffrey Smith’s Award Winning Film, “Genetic Roulette, The Gamble of Our Lives”, it’s a Must See if you’re a budding Food Revolutionary!
And now you can purchase it at Whole Foods.
It’s received the 2012 Movie of the Year (Solari Report) and the Transformational Film of the Year (Aware Guide) Award.
Along with his Assistant Writer and Associate Producer, Samm Simpson, Jeffrey links genetically engineered food to toxic and allergic reactions, infertility, digestive disorders, and numerous problems that have been on the rise in the US population since genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were introduced. It’s a mind altering experience. It might even make you mad enough to join the movement.

The Revolutionaries include:
#2 Dr. Dean Ornish

“For over 35 years, Dr. Ornish has directed clinical research demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery.  Recently, Medicare agreed to provide coverage for this program, the first time that Medicare has covered a program of comprehensive lifestyle changes.  He directed the first randomized controlled trial demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may stop or reverse the progression of early-stage prostate cancer.  His current research showed that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, “turning on” disease-preventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer and heart disease, as well as increasing telomerase, an enzyme that lengthens telomeres, the ends of our chromosomes which control aging (in collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2009).

He is the author of six books, all national bestsellers, including: Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease; Eat More, Weigh Less; Love & Survival; and his most recent book, The Spectrum.”

The Revolutionaries include:
#3 Dr. Vandana Shiva

Dr. Vandana Shiva has fought for changes in the practice and paradigms of agriculture and food. In the photo above, she is campaigning for California’s mandatory labeling of GMO’s Measure that was defeated in November 2012 after Monsanto, Dupont, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Kraft and the Grocery Manufacturers Association spent a combined 22 million to fool Californians into thinking the price of food was going to rise if mandatory labeling of GMO’s was passed.

Vandana Shiva  has assisted grassroots organizations of the Green movement in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Ireland, Switzerland, and Austria with campaigns against genetic engineering.

In 1982, she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, which led to the creation of Navdanya in 1991, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seed, the promotion of organic farming and fair trade.

She has many talks posted on YouTube. Below is a link to one called:

The Revolutionaries include:
#4 Jamie Oliver

Jamie Oliver is fiery Brit who came to the U.S. to help us deal with our abysmal health challenges. He was the first one to coin the term “Food Revolution” in his ABC TV Series by that name that debuted on March 21, 2010.

The show, which was produced by English chef Jamie Oliver and Ryan Seacrest, followed Oliver as he attempted to reform the school lunch programs, help American society fight obesity and change their eating habits in order to live healthier and longer lives.

The series had its UK premiere on Channel 4 on September 13, 2010. The Greek premiere was on Fox Life Greece on November 2010. The premiere in Italy was on Raisat Gambero Rosso Channel in January 2011. The show was cancelled in the U.S. the summer of 2011 because a calcitrant school Board Member in the LA School District refused to cooperate with Jamie and his production team.

#7 Joel Salatin

Joel F. Salatin is an American farmer, lecturer, and author whose books include “Folks, This Ain’t Normal”, “You Can Farm” and “Salad Bar Beef”.

Salatin raises livestock using holistic management methods of animal husbandry, free of potentially harmful chemicals, on his Polyface Farm in SwoopeVirginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. Meat from the farm is sold by direct-marketing to consumers and restaurants.

Joel’s Polyface Farms and his down home and straight-forward demeanor was first debuted in a beautiful documentary called “Fresh” that was made in 2009. From there, he spun off to become one of the most outspoken critics of factory farming and the use of drugs and harmful chemicals in modern day farming practices. One of his monikers is his use of phrases like:

“The chicken-ness of the chicken”

“The cow-ness of the cow”

To indicate the importance of feeding animals what they naturally eat not some concocted mixture of food and antibiotics that is not part of their natural diet.

We’re not the only folks talking about the Food Revolution this Month. Be sure to check out the National Geographic May Issue entitled: THE NEW FOOD REVOLUTION.
The article inside poses this question:
Where will we find enough food for 9 billion?

It goes on to propose that “It doesn’t have to be industrial farms versus small, organic ones. There’s another way and lists the “Five-Step Plan to Feed the World”.
Those steps include:
1. Freeze agriculture’s footprint
2. Grow more on farms we’ve got
3. Use resources more efficiently
4. Shift diets
5. Reduce waste
We recommend you check out this article and see if you agree with the Five-Step Plan. We have mixed feelings.
The good news, National Geographic is addressing the most important topic on the planet–our FOOD.

We have posted all four of our Newsletters on our Word Press Blog starting with January first and progressing through to April. This is the first year we’ve put out Monthly Newsletters. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we’re enjoying sharing our journey.

Sustainably,

Aquaponics USA & Aquaponics World, LLC

Why Aquaponics Logo 8x10

There’s a 3-pronged threat facing our planet and Aquaponics is the answer.

 Dear Subscriber:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news in this, our first Official Monthly Newsletter. So let’s start again and wish you all a Happy New Year. You can expect to receive a Newsletter from us every month during 2014. It’s one of the Projects on our new How To Get Things Done Projects List. We’ll share more about that later. This first Newsletter is all about the important role Aquaponics is playing in the Food, Water and Fish Crisis.

We Have Entered A Time of Crisis:

And our world is now dealing with a shortage of food, water and fish. You can read all about these shortages on our AquaponicsWorld.net website. Just click on The Food Independence Project pdf. on our Home Page. It’s a real eye-opener. Also be sure to look at some of the TED Talks and Videos about these important issues.

We talk about how the world is losing it’s soil and that soils could vanish within the next 60 years due to Big Agra farming practices unless drastic action is taken. We talk about the world-wide demand for water has tripled in the last 50 years leaving even highly developed countries like the U.S. facing water shortages. And we talk about how we have recklessly overfished our oceans and pushed many species of wild fish to near extinction levels. These are serious problems we’re facing.

But there’s something new added to the mix–Fukushima. We know this is shocking and really sad to have to say, but Pacific Ocean fish is no longer safe to eat. The plumes of radiation from Fukushima have contaminated our Pacific West Coast. We have to learn to grow our own fish; and that’s one of the reasons why Aquaponics is so important at this challenging time.

But don’t despair, Aquaponics is here and . . .

If you’re an optimist like we are over here at Aquaponics USA and Aquaponics World, you get it that a perfect storm like this wouldn’t arise if there weren’t a solution that could solve the problem arising with it. Aquaponics is that solution.

It’s all about the Water, Intelligent One.

Aquaponics food growing technology is a recirculating aquaculture system, also known as RAS so it saves 90% of the water used in tillage farming. Water doesn’t get lost in the ground. It just keeps recirculating through the system over and over and over. There is some water loss due to plant uptake and evaporation; but it’s minimal compared to traditional soil farming.

We’re Under Construction at Aquaponics World!

We’re located in the high desert of California above Palm Springs; and in case you’re wondering, we have winter here–cold, below freezing nights. So we’re building an enclosed fishroom where we’ll be putting our fish tanks and other components to demonstrate our Food Forever™ Farm designs. This will be the fish part of our Micro Farm, a miniature version of a full-scale, 10,000 sq. ft. Food Forever™ Farm.

Our Deep Water Culture (DWC) Beds, Duffy Ducts™

And these are the Grow Beds that we’ll be installing in the Growroom that sits next to the Fishroom. We’ll be growing leafy greens, including lettuce, sweet basil, greek basil in these individual DWC Beds that can grow more food using less water than standard DWC Beds.

Back to the new Aquaponics World Fishroom with its Dilution Solution!

Where we’ve added a new component to our system, the Dilution Solution Tank.

This is where you can safely input the few additives like pH-UP, chelated iron or Maxicrop that might be required to optimize your system. These solutions are simply poured into the top of this 60 gallon rain barrel where they mix with the filtered water from the Solid Separation System before entering the fish tanks.

Another Proprietary Component in the Fishroom:

This is our Water Enhancement Technology that we call WET. It’s a Mineralization Tower that greatly reduces the amount of suspended solids while putting out dissolved solids.

With the increased amount of dissolved solids and added nitrates provided by this process, the plants now have a greater amount of nutrients with which to grow.

By keeping the fish waste solids in the system and mineralizing them, the amount of nutrients available to the plants is about double that of a system that completely removes the solids. This process allows for the growth of more plants while keeping the water clean.

Another Proprietary Aquaponics World Food Forever™ Farm Design

A design was needed that split the system water into two paths, one with very clean water that could be used efficiently in the grow beds, and one path that would send the water containing the fish waste solids to be processed in its own system. It was desirable to have a continuous flow during the process. Thus was born the Solids Separation System, or SSS, which is proprietary to our design.

The operation of the SSS has the system water continuously flowing through it without interruption. All water being pumped from the fish tanks passes through the SSS where one of its outputs deliver water containing fish waste solids to be processed and then returned to the fish tank and another output with very clean water that is sent on to the rest of the system where fish waste water would interfere with those components’ processes. All water from both these post SSS processes is eventually returned to the fish tanks.

So What’s Happening at Aquaponics USA, our backyard Home and School System company?

Aquaponics USA is fast becoming the Go To Place for Schools to purchase their Aquaponics Learning Lab Systems that we call Food Forever™ Growing Systems.

Here’s an Aquaponics USA System going into an All Purpose Room in a Tucson Elementary School.

We’ve recently teamed up with a large insurance company that wants to sponsor our Food Forever™ Growing Systems in Schools around the Nation. It looks like we’ll be installing a system in a Houston High School this Spring.

AWorld Food Revolution 8x10The Revolution is here. Are YOU IN?

Less than a hundred years ago, there were no supermarkets; and many families grew their own food, milked their own cows and butchered their own beef, rabbits and chickens. They made sure their vegetables were in the ground in early Spring, weather permitting, and harvested in Fall to make way for the late season crops. The excess food was canned and stored; and anything that could be preserved in cold cellars and basements was stowed away for the winter.
We were food self sufficient and everyone ate organic food. All of the milk was whole and unpasteurized because that’s how it came right out of the cow; and the vegetables came right out of the soil–fresh, nutritious and free of pesticides and petrochemicals. The words GMO’s, Bovine Growth Hormones and Irradiated were unheard of and obesity and diabetes were rare, little known ailments.
What happened? This Newsletter gives a brief account from a historical perspective of what spawned the ongoing FOOD REVOLUTION.

The Industrial Revolution spawned an Agricultural Revolution!

Spanning a mere 100 years from 1800 to 1900, the Industrial Revolution turned primarily agrarian, rural societies into industrialized urban ones. Industrialization marked a shift to powered, special-purpose machinery, factories and mass production. It wasn’t long before the U.S. and other countries challenged themselves to make agriculture more efficient and the principles, strategies and technologies of industrialization were applied to farming. Since then three and one half million family farms in the U.S. have vanished while large corporate farms have replaced them. The goal of these Big Agra Farms–to be the supermarket for the world.
In 1923, the International Harvester Farmall tractor replaced the first draft horse with a machine. The rest is history. Since then, there have been many work and time saving machines designed and used in modern farming. As more machinery came onto the farm, more family farmers gave up the way of life that was becoming a costly business investment in order to remain competitive. They moved their families to the cities to pursue other occupations and join the growing numbers of people who purchased their food from the stores and supermarkets that were springing up everywhere.
After World War II, the use of synthetic fertilizers containing the essential plant growth ingredients of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus (NPK) increased considerably allowing farmers to grow more, faster. With this vast increase of crops, there came the need for a way to eradicate the increasing pest problem; and the first synthetic pesticide was discovered by a Swiss chemist named Paul Muller. This miracle solution to the farmers pest problems was non other than DDT, a toxic stew that was banned in the US in 1972 ten years after the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson’s infamous book, “Silent Spring”, in which she pointed out the collateral damage of DDT to birds, mammals, including humans, and the environment. But that didn’t stop the discovery and use of new, so-called “safer pesticides”, known as POPs, which stands for Persistant Organic (meaning carbon based) Pollutants known for their ability to persist in the environment, being capable of long-range transport, bioaccumulation in human and animal tissue and biomagnification in the food chain.
Unless we understand the past, we’re destined to repeat it. We’ve been repeating it and outdoing ourselves with even more toxic pesticide brews that are necessary to keep vast fields of single crop species alive. Our modern day animal husbandry methods have become criminally insensitive to the basic rights of these beloved animals that live to feed us.
The FOOD REVOLUTION is about stopping that madness, valuing small, local family farms, lessoning the miles food travels from farm to plate, improving the conditions under which food animals are raised, appreciating real food, growing our own food again, returning to the age-old method of food preservation called canning and, in short, taking several steps backwards into our agrarian past to reclaim our right to wholesome, healthy, nutritious food and our right to be the loving caretakers of the land and the animals that give their lives for our sustenance.
In Part 2, you’ll meet an activist farmer who has that very attitude about his animals and his farm, Joel Salatin.

Big Agra and Big Chemi Companies got into the FOOD Business and are taking industrialization to the extreme! Below are three books that tell that sad tale.

Back in the decade between 1962 and 1972, it took only one book, “Silent Spring” and ten years to get DDT banned in the U.S. It’s taking many times as many books and a little longer these days as one of the world’s heros and a leading activists against Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s), Jeffrey Smith, wrote his first book, “Seeds of Deception” in 2003. It was followed by his second book on the same subject entitled “Genetic Roulette” in 2007 as was F. William Engdahl’s book, “Seeds of Destruction”. Many other books on the GMO subject are out in the market.
So we’re now 11 years out since Jeffrey Smith published his first book, “Seeds of Deception”, and  in late April of 2014, Vermont put itself on the map as the first state in the U.S. to pass a GMO mandatory labeling bill so their residents will know if GMO products are in their food. Both Maine and Connecticut passed GMO labeling bills before Vermont, but their bills take effect only if neighboring states also pass similar bills. Vermont is the forerunner of what is about to become a mass rejection of GMO’s in the U.S. Finally, as we’re behind the curve compared to many other countries. More on that in Part 2.

But wait. We’ve gotten ahead of ourselves.
What are GMO’s and where did they come from?

A recent study out of France showing huge tumors growing on rats fed GMO corn for their lifetime, which in the case of the females, is a much shorter one, caused both Russia and France to ban GMO corn. Corn grown in the U.S. is almost exclusively GMO corn; and almost every manufactured snack food is loaded with high fructose CORN syrup. Snack foods are delivery methods for GMO’s.
According to the Non GMO project, a consumer advocate group working to expose the dangers of GMOs, they “are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. We even have lambs that glow in the dark because they have genes taken from jellyfish.
Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.”

Who is MONSANTO?

The illustration above by the famous artist, Dees, is just one of many examples of the growing movement against the Monsanto Corporation, which is largely responsible for putting GMO’s into our delicate food chain.

Monsanto was established in 1901 and it’s first product was saccharin. By 1955, Monsanto branched out into the petroleum business and acquired Lion Oil. With this acquisition, it was introduced to the fertilizer business. From there it moved into the agricultural chemical business with one of its leading products, a weed killer called Round Up, which is known worldwide.

In the 1960’s and 1970’s, Monsanto gained the esteemed reputation of being a leading producer of Agent Orange, which contained the toxic chemical called dioxin. They produced this chemical for the U.S. Military in Vietnam. By the end of that war, “72 million liters of Agent Orange were sprayed on over one million Vietnam civilians and over 100,000 U.S. troops. Within ten years of the end of the war, 9,170 veterans had filed claims for disabilities believed to be caused by Agent Orange.”

And now, as a result no doubt of their sterling reputation, Monsanto’s goal is to produce GMO food for the world. This company realized that they could create GMO seeds that grew plants that were resistant to their weed killer, Round Up. Farmers could buy these GMO seeds and use copious amounts of Round Up to kill their weeds without affecting their plants. Round Up is a Glyphosate. A Glyphosate is a poison, which is extremely deadly for most plants and quite toxic for people especially over time. It not only can get in the human bloodstream; but it can cross the blood barrier and reach our unborn children. Current Roundup Ready crops include soy, corn, canola, alfalfa, cotton, and sorghum, with wheat under development. We could write a book on Monsanto and are only giving you a bird’s eye view of how and why they got into the GMO food and seed business, which, by the way is motivating them to buy as many seed companies as they possibly can. It’s an attempt to control our FOOD worldwide.

We all have Monsanto to thank for the FOOD REVOLUTION that is taking place worldwide.

             THANK YOU,

Mother Theresa once said, “I will never attend an anti-war rally; if you have a peace rally, invite me”. Likewise, we are actually suggesting here that we all quit fighting against Monsanto and start thanking that company for being the progenitor of the FOOD REVOLUTION. By the way, this is a peaceful REVOLUTION that we fight with our wallets.
What’s the reasoning behind this theory? We had all become quite complacent about pesticides, herbicides and irradiated food. We certainly weren’t demanding to have those foods labeled or identified because we all know that every fresh vegetable that isn’t labeled organic has been sprayed with pesticides; and we’ve been consuming them for years now. The irradiated subject is much more mysterious; and we explain it in some detail below.

If Monsanto hadn’t been hell bent on putting out GMO’s in great abundance worldwide and keeping us from knowing which foods contain them, we’d still be complacently buying all kinds of toxic and unhealthy foods manufactured by the large food producing corporations. The advent of GMO’s caused us all to take a good look at the entire corporate takeover of our food production and the annihilation of the once prolific family farm. This corporate food production oligarchy dominated by a few giant corporations pays much less attention to the well being of the produce and animals that they raise and the humans they feed than to their profit and loss statements. The obesity epidemic measured by the size of our bottoms means nothing to these mega giants that are much more concerned about the well being and size of their bottom lines.

What’s Coming in Part 2?

We actually thought this was going to be one Newsletter but are now realizing that it’s at least two Newsletters.
What’s coming in Part 2 is the real Nitty Gritty of the FOOD REVOLUTION. Who are the major players? What are they doing and why? What books to read and much more.
So stay tuned. In the meantime, read your labels, do your best to stay away from GMO’s, stay healthy and don’t miss the FREE 2014 FOOD REVOLUTION SUMMIT. Get the details below.

Don’t miss the Free 2014 FOOD REVOLUTION SUMMIT. You can learn all about how to participate by clicking here so hurry because it starts tomorrow on April 26th.

John and his son, Ocean, Robbins weren’t the first ones to coin the term FOOD REVOLUTION; but they’re running with it. Actually, a vivacious young chef from Great Britain brought the concept of a FOOD REVOLUTION to the U.S. with his fantastic TV Series called “Jamie Oliver’s FOOD REVOLUTION”. We’ll talk more about that in Part 2.
John and Ocean Robbins, of the famous Baskin and Robbins Ice Cream Brand, have turned away from their family legacy and fortune to become advocates of healthy eating and real food. This is the second FOOD REVOLUTION SUMMIT they’ve produced.
It’s FREE and offers Worldwide access. So don’t miss it. Once it streams, you can purchase the entire Summit on CD’s and share it with friends and family.

See you at the FOOD REVOLUTION SUMMIT April 26-May 4, 2014.

What is Irradiated Food?

If you haven’t heard of this industrialized method for messing with nature’s bounty, don’t feel bad. You’re among good company. We even had to look it up to get a grasp on it. Here’s Wikipedia’s definition:
“Food irradiation is the process of exposing foodstuffs to a source of energy capable of stripping electrons from individual atoms in the targeted material known as ionizing radiation. The radiation can be emitted by a radioactive substance or generated by high-energy accelerators including X-ray converters. Irradiated food does not become radioactive”; but, folks, it’s far from normal.
“Irradiation damages food by breaking up molecules and creating free radicals. The free radicals kill some bacteria, but they also bounce around in the food, damage vitamins and enzymes, and combine with existing chemicals (like pesticides) in the food to form new chemicals, called unique radiolytic products (URPs). Some of these URPs are known toxins (benzene, formaldehyde, lipid peroxides) and some are unique to irradiated foods. Scientists have not studied the long-term effect of these new chemicals in our diet. Therefore, we cannot assume they are safe.” But the ugly truth is they are being assumed to be safe and are prolific in our supermarkets. From Organic Consumers article entitled “What’s Wrong With Food Irradiation?
So why and when is our food being irradiated? Again from Wikipedia, “This treatment is used to preserve food, reduce the risk of food borne illness, prevent the spread of invasive pests, delay or eliminate sprouting or ripening, increase juice yield and improve re-hydration. It is permitted by over 50 countries, with 500,000 metric tons of foodstuffs annually processed worldwide.”
In the U.S., fresh tropical fruit from Hawaii, Florida, Mexico, some Asian countries, India and Pakistan, dehydrated spices, spinach and ground meat products are all irradiated before they hit your grocery store shelves. In fact, Mexico has become the largest exporter of irradiated produce to the U.S. Varieties of produce include Mangos, Sweet citrus, Manzano Peppers, Starfruit and Guava.” Beware, if it’s produce coming from Mexico, it’s been irradiated.
