Because we only entered the Food World in 2009 when we introduced our Aquaponics USA Food Growing Systems, we keep getting blown away by our own Newsletters; and it’s happened again. This is Part 15 of our on-going series entitled “Obesity In AMERICA”.

“The Soy Brief” we are presenting here is another sad example of how Big Govern-ment and Big Food are colluding to keep us all shackled to their unhealthy products that are all about making them rich and making us sick.

And once again, I’m mad. Our country looks more and more like a 3rd World Country every day as the GMO Cartel runs rough shod over our right to know what’s in our food and Big Food gets in bed with Big Government to put out poison like Soy disguised as health food.

This continuation of subterfuge, obfuscation and   underhanded lies is forcing us to give up on packaged and processed foods altogether in favor of our health and longevity; and right now, I’m breaking out my new cookbook, The Fannie Farmer Cookbook, which is celebrating its 100th Anniversary. There won’t be any High Fructose Corn Syrup, Artificial Sweeteners, MSG or GMO’s in here.

Once You Read “The SOY Brief”, You’ll Never Eat Soy Again–Obesity In AMERICA Part 15!

Why? Because you’ll understand why soy isn’t and never was a health food. It’s another health food sham perpetrated by Big Food companies that had to find a way to market their byproduct. “The soy bean is a unique plant. It is one of the few legumes with more protein than carbohydrate. When you press soy beans to make oil, a lot of protein remains. Any frugal factory manager tries to find a use for byproducts. The soy industry has ingeniously turned this waste into soy foods with a market worth hundreds of millions of dollars.”
“Soy bean oil is found in hundreds of processed foods. Baked goods, tortilla chips, margarine, mayonnaise, and imitation dairy products all contain soy. Soy has taken the place in the standard American diet of the real fats in butter, milk, meat, and fish. We are eating more and more soy, largely due to the unchallenged health claims of the soy lobby.” (Quotes in this paragraph are from the Property Rights Research website article entitled ”  The Billion-Dollar Myth“)

Just like Artificial Sweeteners, MSG and High Fructose Corn Syrup, Soy Oil is Manufactured.

A not so innocent [to be explained below] high protein legume is turned into tons of toxic brew with the help of a modern manufacturing processes called Extraction. In order to get the oil out of the soybean, intense heat and pressure has to be used. But the very act of heat-treating oils causes them to spoil and become carcinogenic. “But the heat and pressure are not enough. To finish extracting the last bit of oil from soy beans, factories treat the pulp with chemical solvents like hexane.” (Quote taken from Property Rights Research article entitled, ” The Billion-Dollar Myth“)
Hexane is an organic compound made of carbon and hydrogen. But don’t let the word “organic” fool you. It’s actually a byproduct of petroleum and crude oil refinement. At room temperatures, it’s colorless and odorless so it can be added to food undetected. Most vehicle-grade gasoline contains it; and it’s often used as an industrial cleaner. It just so happens it is also good at extracting oils from vegetables especially soy beans.  (Information taken from the WiseGEEK website page entitled ” What is Hexane?“)
Ah, but this convoluted process isn’t complete yet. The soy oil is then hydrogenated. “Hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils whose chemical structure has been altered to prevent rancidity in foods, which increases shelf life and saves money for food manufacturers. The process of hydrogenation involves the addition of hydrogen atoms to the oil’s available double bonds. As the level of hydrogenation increases, the level of saturated fat increases and the level of unsaturated fat decreases. The hydrogenation process converts what are known as “cis” double bonds to “trans” double bonds. This is where the term “trans fat” originates. Hydrogenation also has the technical advantage of making foods solid or partially solid at room temperature.” So it’s important to understand that hydrogenated fats are the same as trans fats and they are terrible for the human body because they “increase bad cholesterol –low-density lipoprotein, or LDL — and decrease good cholesterol–high-density lipoprotein, or HDL. Furthermore, they block the production of chemicals that combat inflammation and benefit the hormonal and nervous systems, while at the same time allowing chemicals that increase inflammation. This means that trans fats promote inflammation and negatively impact cholesterol levels.” (Quotes in this paragraph taken from the Livestrong website article entitled ” Why Is Hydrogenated Oil Bad for You?“)

Like MSG, Soy has become ubiquitous?

In fact, the process that creates soy protein also creates glutamic acid, which IS MSG. If you want to know more about the horrors of MSG, just click over to our June Newsletter.
“When the food giants make soy protein, the results are not wholesome. Soy protein processing produces glutamic acid–the natural form of monosodium glutamate (MSG), a brain poison– and toxins and carcinogens are formed.”
That’s right, the soy proteins like you see in the image to the right, including soy milk, tofu, soy cheese, sow meats and most forms of soy sauce produce glutamic acid, which is actually MSG.
What’s more, “the soy bean itself is dangerous.
Even the soy industry admits that soy products contain toxins. These toxins are usually referred to as ‘anti-nutrients’ because they make it difficult for the body to absorb nutrients. Soy is rich in the anti-nutrient phytic acid. Phytic acid binds with iron and zinc, which are essential for the health of the brain and nervous system. That means the body can’t use the iron and zinc it has–or copper, calcium, and magnesium. Too many phytates retard growth in children. Soy also contains substances called trypsin inhibitors. They make it difficult to digest proteins.” (Quotes taken from the Property Rights Research website article entitled “The Billion-Dollar Myth“)

Unfortunately, the Market Place is awash with Soy Formula for Babies! 

If Soy is bad for Adults, it’s even worse for Infants and Children.
So many choices and so much infant hormonal destruction. Even Gerber’s has gotten into the act.
According to Dr. Kaayla Daniel, author of The Whole Soy Story, the biggest problem with soy formula has to do with the plant estrogens also known as isoflavones found in all soybeans
whether they are organic, sprayed with pesticides
or genetically modified.
Dr. Kaayla Daniel is joined by the Israeli Health Ministry, the French Food Agency, the German institute of Risk Assessment, British Dietetic Asso.
and the Swiss Federal Health Service, but not the U.S. FDA, in her declaration that “Soy infant formula should only be used as a last resort.”

Why? Because “although phytoestrogens [plant estrogens] are not identical to human estrogens, they are close enough to cause significant hormone disruption, adversely affecting the infant’s devel-oping body and brain.”
“According to calculations made by the Swiss Federal Health Service, soy infant formula provides the hormonal equivalent of three to five birth control pills per day. The range is wide because some infants are hungrier than others, but it obviously represents a high dose of estrogen for anyone, and especially for infants whose very development requires the right hormones in the right place at the right time.”
“Studies on rats, sheep, monkeys and other animals –coupled with growing numbers of reports from pediatricians and parents –suggest that the estrogens in soy infant formula can irreversibly harm the baby’s later sexual development and reproductive health.”

And that’s exactly what we’re seeing. “Now that sales of soy formula have been a growth industry for more than 30 years, it is probably not coincidental that pediatricians are reporting greater numbers of boys whose physical maturation is either delayed or does not occur at all. Breasts, underdeveloped gonads, cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) and steroid insufficiencies are increasingly common. Sperm counts are also falling, and sperm quality has also declined.”

For girls, the opposite is happening. They are experiencing early puberty. “Besides cutting short childhood, early maturation in girls heralds reproductive problems later in life, including amenorrhea (failure to menstruate), anovulatory cycles (cycles in which no egg is released), impaired follicular development (follicles failing to mature and develop into healthy eggs), erratic hormonal surges and other problems associated with infertility.” (Above 5 Quotes taken from The Food Renegade website article entitled “Soy Infant Formula: A Formula For Disaster“)

This is not the end of this frightening story, “other problems that have been anecdotally associated with children of both sexes who were fed soy-based formula include extreme emotional behavior, asthma, immune system problems, pituitary insufficiency, thyroid disorders and irritable bowel syndrome.”(Quote taken from the Food Renegade website article entitled ” Soy Formula Linked To Seizures In Children“)

And “two studies by University of Illinois food science and human nutrition professor Sharon Donovan show that the soy isoflavone genistein, in amounts present in commercial soy infant formulas, may inhibit intestinal cell growth in babies.”

Finally, “findings from an initial study on mice led the team to investigate the links between soy and seizures in a group of nearly 2,000 infants fed either dairy or soy based formula. The findings showed that children with autism who were fed soy formula had 2.6 times as many febrile seizures as the children fed non-soy formula in the database. That means 4.2% of the soy group had a seizure associated with a fever, compared to 1.6% of the dairy group, said the team.” (Above 2 Quotes taken from the Food Renegade website article entitled “Soy Formula Linked To Seizures In Children“)

Still Big Food continues to promote soy formula and a multitude of other soy-based products to mothers of infants and children as they ride high on all the hype all the way to the bank while continuing to spread their lie that soy is good for all of us.

Maybe a few Women will remain loyal to Almighty Soy, but after reading this part of “The Soy Brief”, there won’t be a Man in sight eating Tofu or any other Soy product! 
Why is soy the scourge of mankind? Here are four ways soy messes with a man’s manliness. There’s an old Chinese wives tale that goes like this. If a Chinese woman with an overly frisky husband is wanting to put the brakes on in the bedroom without harming her husband’s ego, all she has to do is add a lot of soy to her husband’s diet, and the bedroom becomes a quiet, serene monastery. “Buddhist monks knew this; they ate tofu to reduce their libido.”
1. Soy Is Known To Feminize A Man’s Body: Soy in large quantities over a period of time (2-3 quarts a day), can actually feminize a man’s body causing “man boobs” to appear, a low libido, heightened emotional responses and a sense of things just not being right.
2. Soy Can Reduce A Man’s Sperm Count: “A Harvard University cross-sectional study published in ‘Human Reproduction’ found that dietary intake of soy and isoflavones reduced sperm concentration in men. Although the reduction was small, it was considered statistically significant. The research found that including soy in the diet most affected men with normal or high sperm counts. Also, soy food was more related to low sperm in overweight and obese men in the study.”
3. Soy May Decrease Penile Function: “Some research suggests that large doses of soy may decrease penile function. A certain isoflavone found in soy, daidzein, and its effects on erectile functions were studied in rats. Research published in the “Journal of Andrology” found that consuming daidzein in youth could negatively affect penile functioning into adulthood. Rats that consumed daidzein had softer erections; however, testosterone was not significantly affected. In this study, daidzein did not affect penis size and growth. However, researchers admit that rat studies do not necessarily reflect the same results in humans.”
4. Soy May Cause Negative Behavioral Patterns: Soy may negatively affect behaviors in men, according to research published in ‘Hormones and Behavior.’ Researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center divided adult male monkeys into three groups for the 15-month study. One group had approximately 125 mg of isoflavones from soy daily. The second group had half the amount, and the third group’s protein came from milk and animal sources. The monkeys fed the high amount of isoflavones demonstrated more aggressive and submissive behavior than their counterparts. They also spent less time with other monkeys and increased their alone time. (Above 4 Quotes taken from the Live Strong website article entitled ” Is Soy Milk Bad for Men?”)
If you’re a man who is eating soy, you may want to stop yesterday. If you’re a man who is considering adding soy to your diet, think again. But here’s the universal Big Food problem that has to be considered by all of us. Soy is another unhealthy health food that is being hidden in many processed and packaged foods. Once you decide to eliminate it, then you have to become a detective like the one on our cover image who diligently looks for it in everything you buy in a box or a bag.
The Video below describes this problem perfectly. It comes from The Weston A. Price Foundation ” Soy Alert!” web page, which is full of other important information about the detrimental effects of soy on the body.

How Does Soy Specifically Affect Women?
If you’re looking to conceive, you would be wise to avoid eating soy. ” According to a study involving humans, a compound in soy known as genistein has been found to impair sperm as they swim toward the egg. Even tiny doses of the compound in the female tract could destroy sperm.”

In laboratory tests, researchers saw that the soy chemical created “a premature reaction in the sperm, forcing them to peak long before they could fertilize an egg”. Sperm have to be Olympic swimmers at the level of Mike Phelps to arrive at their destination. They start in the vagina, move through the cervix to the uterus and then swim the full length of the womb. It takes several hours for them to complete this herculean race. “Without the presence of genistein around a woman’s womb, sperm would peak as they should–far closer to completing their swim to fertilize the egg.”
“Moreover, what was surprising and telling about soy’s harmful effects on human health was that it took smaller doses of genistein to create infertility problems in human females than in mice.”
“What’s more, researchers explain avoiding soy around a woman’s more fertile days of the month might actually aid conception. Genistein can be found in all soy-containing products, including:
  • Soy milk
  • Many vegetarian foods
  • Some pre-packed meals and pizza”

If you need another reason to drop Soy like a Poison Pill, here it is: 94% of the Soy planted in the U.S. is GMO!
 
“Based on a USDA survey data, HT [Herbicide Tolerant, read GMO] soybeans went from 17 percent of U.S. soybean acreage in 1997 to 68 percent in 2001 and 94 percent in 2014, 2015, and 2016.” (Quote taken from the USDA Economic Research Service article entitled “Adoption of Genetically Engineered Crops in the U.S.“)
If you’re eating soy, there’s a 94% chance you’re eating GMO soy. “Organic production, by contrast, is marginal–it accounts for less than 1 percent of total American acreage devoted to soy. (The remaining 9 percent or so of soybeans are conventionally grown, but not genetically modified.)”
Second to corn, soybeans are one of the largest crops grown in the U.S. covering about one fourth of our American farmland. And you’ll never guess which Herbicide our soybeans are tolerant of–Monsanto’s Roundup, of course. We have actually allowed a company that started as a chemical company to influence, infiltrate and dictate what we grow on one fourth of our land so they can sell their toxic chemical called Roundup that is full of a known carcinogen called glysophate. Unbelievable!
Before we go on our tirade about the horrors of glysophate, let’s look at where all those soybeans go. “After harvest, the great bulk of soybeans are crushed and divided into two parts: meal, which mainly goes into feed for animals that become our meat, and fat, most of which ends up being used as cooking oil or in food products. According to the US Soy Board, soy accounts for 61 percent of American’s vegetable oil consumption.”
The peer-reviewed journal “Food Chemistry” conducted a study which found “that Monsanto’s ubiquitous Roundup Ready soybeans, engineered to withstand its own blockbuster herbicide, contain more herbicide residues than their non-GMO counterparts. The team also found that the GM beans are nutritionally inferior.
The study also found “residues of glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) and aminomethylphosphonic acid, or AMPA, the compound glyphosate breaks down into as it decays, on all 10 of the GM samples-and in none of the non-GM and organic ones.” Our EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) shares a common glyphosate residue limit with the European Union at 20 ppm (parts per million). The average ppm of glyphosate on soy was found to be almost 12 ppm, which is lower than the EPA limit but over twice as high as Monsanto’s claims of their maximum recorded reading at 5.6 ppm (a claim they themselves described as extreme).
The article being quoted here was written on April 23, 2014. Since then the World Health Organization has linked glyphosate to cancer and declared it to be a “probable carcinogen”.  That jaw-dropping declaration made in March of 2015 caused a world-wide stir; and several countries moved to ban Roundup entirely. Among them are France, the Netherlands and Brazil.
Notice the U.S. isn’t one of the countries that moved even one iota to protect its citizens from the ravishes of glyphosate. Why? Because Monsanto is comfortably ensconced in Big Government’s cozy and protective bed. In fact, what happens here is Monsanto ups its marketing campaign in the U.S. to make up for losing customers in the countries that care about their citizens health and well being, and we get slammed with more GMO’s.
Remember, our food animals eat a lot of that huge soy harvest, so even if you’re carefully avoiding soy in your diet and you are a meat eater, you are getting soy indirectly from the soy eaters that you eat. And here’s more bad news, glyphosate has other ways of getting into our bodies besides through the food we eat. “In a 2011 study, researchers for the US Geological Survey ‘frequently detected’ glyphosate in surface waters, rain, and air in the Mississippi River basin. ‘The consistent occurrence of glyphosate in streams and air indicates its transport from its point of use into the broader environment,’ USGS stated in a press release, adding that ‘we know very little about its long term effects to the environment.’
“Charles Benbrook, a Washington State University researcher who documented the rise in glyphosate use that has accompanied Roundup Ready crops, told me [the author of the quoted article here, Tom Philpott] that ‘human dietary exposure to glyphosate is now probably the highest ever for any pesticide used in the US. When you consider the additional doses we get through water and air, the chemical stands in a class by itself in terms of human exposure. I sure hope EPA is right in its evaluation of the toxicity of glyphosate,’ he said. More soy, anyone?

So Why Is Soy Still So Popular in Asian Diets?
The first thing you need to understand is there are two entirely different kinds of soy–Fermented and Non-Fermented. Fermented soy “is central to many traditional Asian diets and is primarily consumed as a condiment. As such, in all, Asians typically only eat 2 teaspoons of fermented soy a day”. 
 
The Fermentation process can take up to 18 months during which time the so called “anti-nutrient’ problem (making the iron, zinc, copper, calcium and magnesium useless in your body) due to the binding effect of  phytic acid in soy, is nullified. 
 
In the U.S. and many other parts of the world, soy is not fermented. It is manufactured like we explained above; and the same goes for soy sauces. The most common soy sauces sold in supermarkets and served at the majority of restaurants are made in two days or less as opposed to 18 months. “Modern soy sauces may also contain dangerous levels of chemicals known as chloropropanols, which are produced when soy sauce production is sped up using acid hydrolyation methods. Researchers have also found furanones in commercial soy sauce. These are mutagenic to bacteria and cause DNA damage in lab tests. Salsolinol, a neurotoxin linked to DNA damage and chromosomal aberrations, Parkinson’s disease and cancer, has been identified in soy sauce.”
 
You can purchase genuine fermented raw soy sauce by clicking on this link. These sauces are unpasteurized. Or most people will be okay eating small amounts of pasteurized tamari and shoyu sauce that they can get at their local health food store. The Same Thing is Wrong with Soy as is Wrong with Sugar, Sugar Substitutes, High Fructose Corn Syrup and MSG–WAY TOO MUCH!!!

Between these 3 companies alone, nearly $2 million has been spent so far in 2016 to promote the lie that soy is healthy.
 
The contributions from the Monsanto PAC to federal candidates in 2016 has been $425,000. The Individual Donors all list their Occupation as “Monsanto”. It has been well documented that a revolving door exists between Monsanto and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as well as other governmental agencies. Monsanto was once a chemical company that has the infamous reputation of creating and making Agent Orange. Now it controls most of the 94% of GMO soybeans we grow in the U.S. How? It got a patent on the GMO seeds; and through a lot of slick advertising and lies, convinced farmers to buy them. (Information regarding Monsanto’s GMO soybean seeds taken from a Marketplace website article entitled ” Monsanto: The behemoth that controls 90 percent of soybean production“)
 

 
This year alone, the American Soybean Association spent $220,000 to convince our governmental representatives that their constituents who want to reduce meat and fats, will benefit by consuming soy–lots and lots of soy. To see this chart up close, go to OpenSecrets.org.

This screen shot shows how much they and their affiliates have given in contributions to candi-dates and lobbying efforts for the advancement of their products of which soy plays a major role.
$930,000 has been spent in lobbying so far this year, which is on par with 2015 in which they spent $1,890,000 to wield their influence over our government.
According to OpenSecrets.org, there’s a revolving door between our government and this company as “8 out of 10 Archer Daniels Midland lobbyists in 2015-2016 have previously held government jobs.” (Quote taken from the screen shot below, which was captured from the Open Secrets.org website page entitled ” Archer Daniels Midland“)
In many ways and especially when it comes to Big Food, we are all Bernie (Bernie Sanders that is)–little men fighting the big, rigged cog controlled by huge corporations that are in bed with government. We weren’t supporting Bernie in his bid for the presidency of the U.S; but we have a lot of respect for his willingness to fight the good food fight against Monsanto to get GMO’s labeled in Vermont. This time Goliath won; but the war is far from over because us little people are legion.
